So i reinstalled Windows 98, went to install my soundcard drivers, it installs them, then searchs for new hardware, finds the card, then all my USB hub lights go off, my USB everything's lights go off, and windows BSOD's several times, and then freezes, then i can't get back into windows, cuz' every time it is now finding new hardware, trying to install it, then BSOD's, i can get in w/ Safe Mode. I've reinstalled windows several several times, and this has never happened before..ever!..

BTW, this is now the SECOND time that i reinstalled windows, cuz' of this problem. I can go to safe mode, and delete all the drivers manually, then get back into windows, but as soon as i attempt to reinstall the drivers, windows crashes again?! WHY?!

SPECS:
Sound Card - Creative Sound Blaster Live
Mobo - Abit VP6

thx,
Shadal :-(

It's the mmdevldr.drv file that's doing it i think. As soon as i remove that file from my windows/system directory, i am able to get back into windows, it find the card, but i can click "no" (don't install the drives for it) then it bypasses it..

Without more specs, the possibilities are an IRQ conflict..try moving the SB Live to another slot, overclocking..heat..or memory problems..is the SB Live a new addition?

No, it's not a new addition, like i said, i reinstalled windows.. I've had the card for over a year and have never run into this problem any other time i installed windows.. The card is on IRQ 5, along with 2 serial bus (somethings). I'll try to move the card to a diff slot to see if that helps *shrugs*

Is the mmdevldr.vxd a file that comes w/ windows, or is it installed w/ my soundcard drivers? i can't find it on either CD.. and it's not reinstalling itself when i reinstall the soundcard drivers..

MORE SPECS:
Windows 98
Abit VP6 mobo
Dual 750MHz @133MHz Intel Pentium III Processors
512MB PC133 RAM
Sound Blaster PCI512

mmdevldr.vxd is a windows file..it's in cab54..maybe extract it and overwrite the existing one in your windows/system folder

I think you just answered your own question:

The card is on IRQ 5, along with 2 serial bus (somethings)

You are on the right track, move the SBLive and see if it goes to any other IRQ. USB and SBLive don't play so nice together no matter what lies the makers tell us about IRQ sharing and the like.

Um.. ok, well i moved the card up a slot, and it didn't help any.. Reinstalled the mmdevldr.vxd file, still no help.. Windows won't let me change the IRQ setting, it's saying it's IRQ 00 *rolls eyes* the startup says it's IRQ 5.
I just went through all my Device Drivers Properties, and nothing is on IRQ 5 according to windows. I've got 2 USB Host Controllers (dono y 2) that are both on IRQ 9 along with my USB modem..
Now i'm really confused...

It' an IRQ or memory addy conflict. Also since your using Win98 it's even harder to deal with. Personally I run the Soundblaster card in the 2nd slot down from the AGP slot. (keep one pci slot open between the two). If you have the card in just about anyother slot you will run into conflicts with either USB, COM ports or the ATA100 interface.

ps. You really should think about running Win2K or Linux as your wasting the 2nd processor since Win98 DOES NOT USE 2 processors.

Oh my GOD, Shadal!

Are you running Win98 with Dual Processors???

You don't know what you're missing! The 2nd CPU is just there for decoration! Win9x kernel does not support multi-processors.

BTW - Mntsnow and I are running the same mainboard as you, only we have 850's, not 750's.

I have to set Irq5 to reserved for Legacy in my BIOS to keep my system from using it for other resources and killing my sound card(Soundblaster). Then it use 5 for the sound blaster and assigns other pci devices to different IRQ's

I'm STILL waiting for my copy of Win2K pro to arrive in the mail.. it's been 3 weeks now.. wrote the company i bought it from a nice little nasty letter.. UGH!

Could only afford 750's at the time.. got them for $110/ea.

Anywayz, i'll try moving the card up another slot.. I think it's in the 3rd from the bottom now..

But like i said before, it's when windows "Finds new hardware - Creative SB16 Emulation" is when it BSOD's 6 times then freezes..

I'm pretty sure that the 750's will overclock quite nicely on the VP6... better than the 850's! http://www.sysopt.com/forum/wink.gif

Ok, tried moving the card up.. still no difference. Tried going into bios, and disabling "Assign IRQ for USB, didn't help any.. So after reseting bios back to how it was, this is what i get on startup:
