Look at Edison, Marconi, Westinghouse. Everybody know them but he is almost unknown.

Probably because he spent his vast fortune and last years of life trying to construct a "death ray" /forum/smile.gif.

(he's the person who coined the term deathray though...)

Oh yeah. Not forgetting atmospheric transmission of energy so planes don't need on-board fuel. That was a good one.
Funny thing is, aren't NASA working on bouncing stuff off the ionosphere? Eeek wouldn't like to be in the footprint of THAT experiment.

PS Dominus: I have an old college friend (Nuclear Physics PhD) working on a death ray. So don't mock. /forum/smile.gif

honestly, Tesla's invention is really not practical(unless you make neon signs). Also, here is an interesting quote i once heard, "Well some will say it was the government confiscating Tesla's secret inventions
and conspiring to remove his name from history to cover up the fact." I doubt that though. The coil is really amazing though, and if you get hit by the spark, you'll be feeling it for awhile -=].

I think Tesla had the same press agent as Philo Farnsworth /forum/wink.gif

Vast fortune Dominus ? He forgive Westinghouse all his debts towards him and help him to avoid bankruptcy and lost milions.
What about radio transmisson Wiz (for instance)?

Wiz

even though Tesla invented the radio first, he did not receive credit for it, so that doesn't count -=]. Actually Tesla had a radio communication thesis in the early 1890's, 1891 maybe, i dont remember, but Marconi patented it first. Another thing, Marconi's little move was reversed in the 40's. I dont know who is given credit now, is it Tesla?

A little add-on to that. Tesla also tried to dreate an anti-gravity ship, a televesion that projects mental images, and the plasma ball. He was either a genious or a raving lunatic, i prefer the first.

If it wasn't for Tesla, we would have DC current to every home with a substation at every three miles. He originated the the early work on AC current. His was most renouned for his work in static electricity. He could produce enough energy to literally shake a city block in New York (which is why he later did research in the southwest deserts), but it was at such a frequency that you could walk right through the transmission streams.

Also, U-96, the US government IS working on manipulating the ionosphere. It is called HAARP, and is based in Alaska. It is being funded directly by the military, and little is known on their actually progress. Some claim it could be weather control, others believe it's some type of weapon. Just drop
by a search engine and type HAARP, you'll get thousands of links to this project.

Wasn't it also Tesla that was designing 3phase brushless AC motors while Edison was winding clunky inefficient DC motors and generators?

I think we also owe the basic principles of the entire power grid and distribution system to Tesla - a little more than a coil I think.

Was he nuts - yeah but it's nice to know that I am in good company. My photon capacitor will enable the building of short burst hand laser which can be charged from a very low light source ...wait,,, someone's at the door... yahhhhhhhh!!!

'twas the MIB but I activated my disintegration device which converts the front porch into a megawatt microwave oven..now if I could just get these darn germs off my hands ...pass the clorox please

Try this site out! It won't take that long, and those of you who are his proponents will most likely like it!

I liked it...as I found Tesla really did Patent the radio and Marconi did not,.....

and also that he invented and patented the AC generator....

while edison rebutted by useing AC to elecute poor helpless puppies and horses to prove it was dangerous while ignoring the fact DC can kill them too!

That was almost disturbing to read!

How can you say "Tesla" isn't famous? Did Edison, Marconi or Westinghouse have a rock band named for them?

Yes, I think I can say something like that. If you ask an average student who is N.Tesla, answer would be I do not know (not only in Europe) but if you ask for Westinghouse or Edison most of them will have some answer.

Even in his own country Tesla has a same problem and he is an instrument of the political fight between Croats and Serbs. Tesla - Serbian (father Orthodox priest) born in a part of today's Croatia ruled then by Austro-Hungarians (last century) is mostly ignored (in Croatia) only because his origin and his house of birth was demolished in the last war just because he was not a part of the local nationality majority.

he spent the majority of his life working on the tesla turbine, one of the most effeicnt motors ever, and since it never realy caught on in the public, neither did his name.
check here (http://www.execpc.com/~teba/) for some more info on the turbine. i dont think any of you had metioned it yet...

Interesting link, grandslammer. Also quite an interesting tale about the "venerable" Smithsonian...

Funny enough, the first I learned of Tesla was in elementary school. I remember watching a video and talking about him in class. The teacher must have been a Tesla avocate http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif.

the first time "tesla" was ever mentioned was when I played Command & Conquer Red Alert... the elusive, deadly, and expensive "Tesla Coil" http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif
