I'm having a problem with my upgraded computer. I bought a Duron 850 and put it on a Asus A7V-E.

The weird problem is that when I play games that requires a CD, like Tomb Raider or NFS, I must start to play right when the computer finishes booting, else, if I want to play, let's say 20 minutes later, the games can't start and the computer freezes, mouse still moves, but CTRL-ALT-DEL doesn't bring up the close program window. So each time I want to play a game, I must reboot first, that's quite annoying.

Since my CD (DVD) is the secondary master, could I be victim of the VIA 686 southbridge bug ? I installed VIA's 4in1 4.31v.

Have the same problem. People say that it is caused by the ide controller, but I'm not sure.

Yep...install latest Via drivers, and read the instructions, there is a certain procedure.

I had a simalar problem with IDE controller on Via chipset but it was due to an improper install procedure of the Via chipset drivers. Found the correct procedure at VIA site and it was a simple matter of talling windows NO

JUST SOLVED THE PROBLEM !!! http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif

I followed VIA's "instructions" (click setup), no improvement...

Found out that the problem was in fact not caused by the IDE controller at all.

The computer was set to shut off the monitor after 15 minutes of inactivity, and the Voodoo4 card does not reinitialize properly after doing it. I told Win to never shut down the screen and everything now works fine.

Thank you, at least you tried to help.
