Is this true? How does it show up in the control panel? What software are you using?
Have you used the same software for both of them? Give a little more info if you can.

What wattage is your power supply? If it's small, below 200W, The extra power needed to both read and burn might be asking too much of it.

If you installed it along with your old CDROM, you have to set the master/slave jumpers.
Check the bios, to make sure it is being recognized. And the drive letter.
Make sure you're installing the CDR software for the correct drive D, E, F.

you may not like this response, but it worked for me...
for whatevr reason, the exact same thing was happening to my plextor on a win2k box. I reinstalled the OS, and it seems to have fixed the problem...
good luck

I would check the hardware first: jumpers, cables etc. before installing the os again. Take a look in you bios too to see if your device is listed and that it is set to auto detect the drive in bios. To get into bios, you need to hit delete or maybe f1 during post, it will say at the bottom of the screen which key to hit to enter setup.
Good luck.
weLL IN THE DEVICE MANAGER IT SHOWS UP JUST AS "(cd-rom drive)" AND I TRIED INSTALLING THE DRIVERS BUT I GET ERRORS. Sorry obut caps ;x
Wattage i am not too sure aobut.
I did set the jumpers and currently it is hte only drive connected.
How do i check the BIOS?
I was using Easycd creater 4.

When you say you re-installed the drivers are you refering to your ASPI ( Advanced SCSI Programming Interface ) layer? or merely mscdex.exe
There is a small utility called Aspicheck.exe that tests your Aspi layer and determines whether it is installed and operating properly. The latest Aspi layer released by Adaptec is 4.60[1021]
Anyway here is that Aspi checker: http://www.geocities.com/flemming000/aspi/aspi_checker.zip
If you find that infact no Aspi layer is present you have two options.
Option 1, install an Adaptec programm such as Easy CD Creator ( which automatically installs the Aspi layer as well )
Or, Option 2, find a copy of "Force Aspi" which will install your Aspi layer without having to install an Adaptec program that you don't want and possibly won't use.
I can't provide a link to Force Aspi because ( according to Adaptec this programm is ileagal )
p.s. this is an interesting site: http://www.geocities.com/flemming000/oz/index.htm

What type of CD_RW?
I think some of the CD-RW require a higher speed CPU, like 400MHz, so I guess that might be one of the reason the computer freezes up.
