Thanks for the suggestions.
They do show up in post. I replaced the ribbon cable and switched ports, no luck. I removed them from the device manager and now I can't seem to get'em back. Anything I can do in DOS to check things out?
Thanks

If you boot with a 98 boot disk (choose with CDROM support obviously) can you browse your CD-ROM/CD-R? If they work from DOS (i.e. you can browse media in the drives) it then becomes an OS problem. If not I'd suspect power issues or one of the drives has gone bad. Using a known good IDE cable try one drive at a time, making sure to set the jumpers correctly.

Out of the blue my computer won't recognize my CD-Rom and CD-Writer. Nothing shows up in 'my computer'. Common problem? Help, I wanted to burn a CD today.

First step - are your drives recognized at POST (Power On Self Test for those that don't know http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif )? If not change them to another IDE controller. If they are, do the drives have the correcte voltages (+5 and +12)? You would need a voltmeter and a little electronics skill to do this. Have you tried a new IDE cable? That's prolly the cheapest test http://www.sysopt.com/forum/wink.gif

Did you check in the "Device Manager" to see if they were still listed??? If so " remove " them and reboot and see if they're recognized then. If not try restoring an earlier version of your registry, when they were working ok. If that doesn't work , somehow may be the IDE cable came unseated, not too likely but you never know til you check it. Did you go into "Safe mode"and see if they were listed there??? Try these and let us know>>>>
