I have got everything working on my new puter exept the floppy disk. It worked before but now it doesn't..go figure?? Ok, it is in the little window in My Computer and when you click on it the green light comes on and it makes the noise like there is no disk in it for a few seconds and says cannot read from specified device..even if I put a disk in it it still does it no matter what. It doesn't recognize it in dos either. I type in a:\ and it grinds on it for a second and says abort, retry, fail. Why is this thing doing this? The driver is for a GENERIC NEC FLOPPY DISK, and the floppy controller is a Standard Floppy Controller. How can the light come on and it make the noise but not work? Man..if I ever get this problem solved this think will finally be complete!

is the floppy drive new too?
might have a bad drive or a defect in the floppy cable, the drivers both look correct.

Make sure it's cabled properly, though if it wasn't you would receive error message on POST. Check Device Manager: "Device Working Properly?" Got a spare FDD you could try?
Perhaps a more knowledgable member can give you a better answer. While you're waiting, run a search. The problems likely come up before.

also make sure the interface cable is in there good and tight, one pin might be not quite lining up throwing everything off.
i'd suggest trying a different floppy drive and seeing if that one works.
i know that if the light stays on all the time the interface cable is upside-down.

Is the "A" drive also "New"?
Could be a bad IDE cable, or the drive itself. Sony floppy drive are among the BEST on the market.
If the "A" drive light is on all the time..reverse the connection as dosmaster indicated.
What I dont see mentioned here is that if that the Floppy Disk Controller is not enabled.
To enable it restart the system press delete go into the cmos, probally listed under peripherels, check to see that the FDC..floppy disk controller... is enabled, if not enable it, SAVE..restart.
Hope this Helps

The floppy is not new and the light does not stay on all the time. I checked the cables and everything seems to be right but I have been having problems with it before. I would sometimes not read disks...just like it is doing today, and sometimes it would just fine. It is about 5 years old so it may be time for a new one. I will go into the CMOS and see if the controller is enabled though...that may be it. I will try an old one from one of my friends puters and see if it works.
