Can I nondestructively shrink a partition about 500MB if I have 3GB free on it and defrag first?

Not with Fdisk. You;ll have to get Partition Magic or:

Ranish Partition manager-(shareware)
www.Ranish.com (http://www.Ranish.com)

How reliable is it? I can't back up my hard drive, so I don't want to risk losing data!

I have never had a problem with PM. I have used it many times and never had problems.

Actually, I was talking about Ranish Partition (mentioned above). I only need to do this once, and I don't want to pay for it.

I've never used Ranish but know that its popular. And the price is right. I do believe its a bit harder to use than PM..AND, making a new partition is one of the most potentialy destructive things you can do to a hdd.....

What are you going to use the 500 meg partition for?

Well, I am trying to dual-boot Linux and Win98, and I made my Win partition too big
before I knew I wanted to run Linux. Now, I can't boot Linux, except with a boot disk, since my Win partition ends after cylinder 1023. I want to shrink Windows so I can dual-boot more easily, without losing all my data.
