About once or twice a week, when booting my pc, the hdd continues to run intermittently for about 5-10 minutes right after startup. It will be "on" for about half a second, then "off" for about half a second. I have no applications running yet. This continues for about 5-10 minutes, then stops. No messages about finding or completing anything. When I go to Win2000 Task Manager while this is happening, I see on the Processes tab that services.exe is jumping up to 3-5% of CPU in sync with the hdd activity. I'm not terribly knowledgable in this area, but it definitely seems that there is some kind of service running (occasionally) that is accessing the hard drive during this time.

Do my conclusions sound correct? Any other suggestions of what this might be or how I might determine what is causing this to happen?

If my conclusions are correct, how can I see the services that are running on my machine? Once I know which one is running, how can I disable it or modify it?

I would suggest heading to the Admin Tools and check out the Services section for and services set to run on startup. It may be time consuming, but you may find the culprit(s) by setting them to manual one by one to see if you can pinpoint the one.

Oh, I just thought of something else to check. Do you have a virus scan program installed? I've seen some that will take over a system on boot up to do a complete scan.
