Dear Hardware Guru's,

Is there a way to check the modem speed when connecting to my ISP?

I owned a Jaton modem 56Kflex v.90 and it usually connect to earthlink at 46K (indicated by the modem status icon in the systray). I recently replacing the Jaton with a hardware controlled SupraExpress 56K v.90 internal modem. After the installation in Win98, I am able to connect, for the first time, at 56K and there is a noticeable of speed improvement when connecting to my ISP. Unfortunately, without any new software/hardware installation or modification from my part, a few days later I can only connect at 33.6K-42K max, depend on the access number.

FYI, I try my Jaton on another computer and it connects to my ISP with the usual speed ie. 46K and both of my computer is hooked up to the same phone line.

Does anyone have an idea what could cause this problem?

Thanks for any help and have a Merry Christmas to all of you.

Bandwidth & connection speed tests - note you'll need to have at least Java/JavaScript on to run these two (medium security settings)

Couple of good modem pages to read for better understanding of how it works:
