i've got another computer, and when i connect to the internet, it dials up, connects, then gives me a page saying that the page cannot be displayed. it then disconnects.

what's wrong???

It could be that the URL that is designated as the Home Page is off line; so, you can't connect to the page. As to why it disconnects, your guess is as good as mine. Is the Home Page related to the ISP your trying to connect to? They could be having problems.

the homepage is the isp's page. but it happens with their page and every other page i try to get to. everything works just fine on the computer i'm using at the moment and it's using the same isp, same account and same pages.

It's unchecked, and it still wont work.

I've also go another problem now. It doesn't even connect anymore. I go to connect, the modem makes a noise, then it goes no further. It shows this message:

"Dialing...
Failed to connect to remote computer. No dial tone. Make sure the modem is correctly connected to the computer and phone line."

The modem is internal, and I had just installed it, so it must be connected correctly. The phone line is also connected correctly. There is nothing wrong with the line either, if I connect it to the modem on the other computer, it works. I've noticed that the plugs for the phone line are very dusty.

I then tried another modem. It goes further, but still not far enough. Here's what it says:

"Connected to remote computer.
Verifying user name and password.
Failed to connect to remote computer.
Unable to establish a connection."

The password and username are correct. If they weren't, a different message would come up.

And the last thing I did was try the modem in another computer. After installing it I tried to connect, but got the same problem as i did with it in the other computer.

Is there something wrong with the modem? Or is it something else? There's a program on the computer to stop the computer from connecting to the internet, unless the password is entered. The problem is, that the password has been forgotten. It asks for the password when starting IE, but I've just been closing the box that it shows, or going ctrl+alt+del and then end task. I've been trying to uninstall the program, but the password is needed for that to. And it says do NOT delete the program's files, because that is tampering and internet access will be blocked. Then wouldn't using ctrl+alt+del be tampering also?

Try using the modem from the computer that works properly in the computer that does not. This will tell you right away if it has anything to do with the modem physically. While you're at it I suppose you could try the problem modem in the working 'puter. Follow up by rechecking the drivers for the modem which does not connect to make sure they are not corrupt or outdated. If the modem is not set to plug and play, it may also be an IRQ conflict. (Some still allow jumper settings) Back in the days before plug and pray I "fixed" a lot of computers where a user would stick a modem in either not checking or else not understanding IRQ settings. They had similar experiences of connecting and then hanging up. In one experience the computer went so far as to work fine until the user moved the mouse, at which point the modem crapped out and disconnected http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif Other then that make sure (again i'm sure) that the settings for TCP/IP match your working computer. On a final note some ISPs seem to have problems with certain brands due to the chipset involved, especially the more obscure brands. Phone up the ISP to see if they can provide any info on compatibility issues. Hope my ramble helps you!

*Check if you have installed the proper driver of your modem, also check the modem settings from control panel.
*try using the troubleshooter wizard of IE..from the help...
good luck

Hi
I had the same thing with my internet connection. I am on cable internet i installed Me again and installed modem drivers etc tried for days to get on, then i tried the other phone line and i got on no problem. It turned out it was the cable line, the put my number into ner sockets in the exchange and its been faster than ever.
It might be worth taking it to a friends house and trying it on there line if you think its not your system.

If you determine that it is not cables, modem drivers and such, remove and add the network settings for TCP/IP.

The problem computer is actually a friends. Now that you know that, it'll make it easier to explain everything.

My modem, my computer: No problems.
Their modem, their computer: Wouldn't dial
My modem, their computer: Dialed, but wouldn't connect after doing so.
My computer, their modem: Wouldn't dial

I was using the same phone line, and tried both of our ISP accounts on both machines. Everything worked on mine, but nothing worked on theirs. All drivers were new and correct.

Anyway, i formatted the disk, reinstalled Windows and put a new modem in. And it's working fine now.
