i am getting pings in the range of 180 to 250 on a conistant basis. are these #'s any good. if not is there any way to get lower ping times without having to get a cable moden or dsl which arent and option cause my local phone co. are a bunch of knuckleheads.

It all depends! If gaming...it's on par but some are much better.

A typical 56K modem uses compression to increase its download rate. This actually hurts ping in games. This can be disabled for gameplay. For general internet browsing, I see no problem with those numbers.

well my ping has been around the 156-200(on a good server, 200+ on most others) mark when I've overclocked my cpu on my winmodem. so yeah a faster processor does help with some modems. also I assume you are gaming and thus concerned with your ping. I'd suggest going to a smaller packet size, which may help you get better ping and for me it has helped with packet loss. good luck

Well, even though I'm now on cable (a ping of 25 is not uncommon) I still have this page up at my site: http://www.norcov.com/~donc/Pings.htm

It list a Gamespy's page worth of pings on my 56k connection. 150 seemed to be average.

I usually see a whole page of IP's below 20 ping!
