Hi to all,

I am currently using Windows 98 (1st edition not Second Edition). I have just upgraded my IE from 4.0 to 5.5 but after doing the upgrade, when I surf the web from one web site to another. I keep getting the following pop up window message:

"This program has performed an illegal operation and will be shut down. If the problem persists, contact the program vendor"

May I know what should I do in order to rectify or fix my problem.

Please advise and many thanks in advance.

download the setup file for windows IE version 5.01SP2 from the following web site - http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/ - through the download tab - go down the list to IE5.01SP2 -

uninstall 5.5 from control panel add/remove software

delete temp files - empty the recycle bin -
reboot into safe mode ( usually hit the F8 key the moment you see starting windows in the DOS screen )

then start - programs - accessories - system tools - scandisk , let it finish

same path - defrag - let it finish

reboot

run the IE 5.01sp2 set-up file after connecting to the internet

on a 56k modem, this can take over an hour for the download unless it's the middle of the night..... - take the typical set-up full load.... it'll take about 18MB of space, but it's much more stable than the 5.5 product.

That should fix the problem....

While you're on the microsoft page, you might look for patches and updates to windows 98 as well.....
