TOTALLY CONFUSED ON WHAT TO DO. Bsdboy 04-25-2001, 09:02 AM Try hitting Ctrl-Alt Del close everything except Explorer and Systray or try safe mode. Bsdboy Kuasimodem 04-25-2001, 09:20 AM I personally prefer Norton Speed Disk, it's faster and my hard drive accesses faster too (SANDRA benchmarks prove this). It comes as part of Norton Utilities. Bulldog 04-25-2001, 09:32 AM If you aren't using the new winme defrag(works for all windows versions) go here and download it: http://surecool.com/W95x-MeDefrag.zip Go to your C:/windows folder and find defrag.exe and right click and click "rename". Name it defrag old. Unzip winme defrag and then go to C:/windows and right click winmedefrag.exe and rename it simply defrag.exe. Next time you run defrag it will use the new version and your defrag times will drop to minutes(after the first time). Do the control-alt-delete at the same time and this brings up close program box. Close everything except sys tray and explorer and run defrag. (the first time- now I close nothing and defrag is 2 minutes tops on my 15 gig 7200 rpm-ata100 hard drive). Sorry I should have said to cut and paste the winmedefrag to C:/windows folder as that's where windows looks for it to run defrag. Then rename it defrag.exe so windows will recognize it. This should diable any background programs. fxcapt 04-26-2001, 01:26 PM Download power defrag.exe. It will tell you to reboot then defrag before anything loads. After that I would use Norton spped disk or ME defrag. draboo 04-28-2001, 03:26 PM tried everything you suggested, bulldog, switched defrags, went to safe mode, and it still only goes to 52% after 5 hours of running. cruises to 52 quite fast, but no further. can hear hard drive clicking.pII 400mhz 6gighd /win 98se downloaded sisoft sandra to try to find outwhats up,but dont understand much of the info, being new to this puter stuff. any and all help is greatly appreciated. brad Reddog 04-28-2001, 05:39 PM Try scandisk and a registry cleanup. I don't trust MS's windows scandisk, so rebot in MS DOS prompt safe mode (command prompt safe mode) and type: scandisk /ALL /SURFACE /AUTOFIX /NOSAVE It will look for floppies and CDs, don't worry, just say there is not fp/cd. Cinster 04-28-2001, 05:50 PM Hey did you try doing a SCANDISK in MSDos and seeing if you have any bad sectors? If you have any bad sectors this will stop you from doing a defrag . draboo 04-28-2001, 07:50 PM would like to run registry cleanup and scandisk in msdos prompt, but cant get it to start in safe mode, ala reddog. could someone please explain how to do this?? thanx again for your patience with this extreeme newbee brad Dokeman 04-28-2001, 08:06 PM if you have a western digital hdd and used the format utility that came on the floppy disk with you hdd, defrag and scandisk wont work no matter what. If thats the case you have to do a DOS reformat. beherith 04-28-2001, 08:09 PM Try to disable all resident programs. Goldwingnut 04-28-2001, 08:16 PM Draboo: hold down F8 key while booting. Select safe mode from menu draboo 04-29-2001, 06:03 AM tried redogs suggestions about running scandisk in msdos safe mode. it said i need a driver called himen.sys is there a website i can download this file from??thanx mucho brad SysOpt.com
