computer is running '98 se

boots fine, but just as the desktop is presenting itself the unit freezes.

Some icons are complete, some are windows default.

At this point, I cannot get anything from the computer at all.

Children are responsible for dragging folders by accident (age 4) I checked windows dir, re-installeded 98 over the top, but no dice. Any ideas?

Can u get into the pc in safe mode?

You could also try stalling the boot up by pressing F8 when it says Now starting Windows 98.. and typing scanreg/ fix

You could tell us a little more about your system - motherboard, CPU, ram, etc.

How long has this been going on. Recent occurrence, or something happening since day one. Did you do anything that might have caused it.

Is your system freezing up always at that particular spot, or does it do a song-and-dance routine on you and stop at a time and location of its choice.

Dave_Whittle's 2 suggestions are good. Safe Mode allows your system to boot up with minimum load - mouse, keyboard and display card. If you manage to boot Windows in Safe Mode, your problem is a driver of the boot sequence. Scanreg /fix may not be the answer but it's worth a try.

Here's another suggestion that would cut the chase down to the culprit, if, indeed, it is a driver of the boot sequence.

Start your computer, press F8. When Windows 98 Startup Menu appears, select Item 4, Step-by-Step Confirmation. Go through the whole sequence of initialization. When you're stop dead in your tracks and cannot go forward, that driver you see on screen is your culprit. But complete the Step-by-Step Confirmation. There may be other mischievous drivers waiting in the wings to stump you.

If a driver, or drivers, is at fault, you can run System File Checker, insert your OS Installation CD and extract a clean copy of the driver, or drivers, from the cabinet files.

If you complete the Step-by-Step Confirmation cycle without any hitch, point your piece at the display card and read him his rights. Of course, you may be sued for false arrest but, heck, someone's got to do the job.

I had a problem of system freezing up once with NVidia GeForce 2 MX card. When I installed NVidia's Detonator 3 Ver 6.30 drivers, the seizure stopped.

But, of course, there are other possible causes.

Playing cops and robbers is fun, isn't it!

Thanks guys,

I had tried all suggestions, but to no avail.

F8 and step by step etc.

Booted to dos saved all personal files and reinstalled 98se

Runs like a charm, so hardware was fine.

Thanks for your help, but it would seem reinstall was necessary.

Case closed.
