I have been given a small fishing tackle like box full of various size (Mb) 72pin simm chips, but have no clue of how many Mb each chip is.
Is there a way to tell how big a chip is?
Thanks

I don't know of a way to look at a simm module and tell anything about it, unless you can figure out who made it, and go to their web site and track down the data on the chips.
If you can install a pair at a time (try to choose two of the same) and download a free evaluation copy of SiSoft Sandra, and run the motherboard benchmark or test, it will identify the ram for you, and give you the mb as well.

I was hoping to avoid the time and effort of installing, POST, uninstalling ram, Trying to find (hopefully) an easier way.
Check for numbers such as 4X32 or 4X36. Multiply the first number by 4, that's your size (4X4=16). The 36 would designate parity.

You could have run across quite a nice treasure chest of goodies if they're not all 2 and 4MB modules. Simms are very expensive right now compared to the more popular SDRAM Dimms.
What do 16x64, 16x72, etc. represent when describing memory? (http://support.crucial.com/scripts/crucial.exe/solution?11=001115-0006&130=000974322108&14=&2715=&15=&2716=&57=faq&58=&2900=&25=-1)
