In the following web page
www4.tomshardware.com/cpu/0191/0191/pentium_scaling-03.html
it states that the intel 440BX chipset 2000 can support a 850 pent 3 could I have confirmation that this would work in a m/b GA-2000, dispite its manuals specifying a 650 being its max speed
I've also checked the web m/b web and it only mentions a bios upgrade for a celeron 700
www3.gigabyte.com/support/intel440BX.html

Sorry for any trouble and I promise this will be the last this topic you hear from me

Personally, I would tend to believe what the manual says about the MOBO. What Intel or anyone else says about the CHIPSET is an entirely different matter. The BIOS can be a limiting factor as well as the bus speed.

If the board officially supports 650 MHz P3, then it supports Coppermine CPU's.

THe only limitation from that point is :

1. Bus speed...you may be limited to the BX chipset specification of 100MHz ( or if your lucky maybe up to 133 MHz overclocked )

2. CPU multiplier. If the motherboard only supports multipliers up to 6.5...well...who cares? HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
The Penitum 3 CPU is multiplier locked http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif

This is good because it will ignore the motherboard setting altogether. This means that 850MHz CPU, with it's 100 MHZ FSB design and 8.5x multiplier will run just fine at 850 MHz no matter what the motherboard believes. http://www.sysopt.com/forum/biggrin.gif

I bet it will work fine. You might have to set a bios option to halt on "No Errors" so you won't see a speed error every time you boot the PC...but it will still work fine.

I hope you get a really good deal on the 850 MHz because it's getting real old nowadays http://www.sysopt.com/forum/frown.gif
