My monitor works just fine at boot and shows the "WIN ME" screen and then! screen goes haywire. just a bunch of goofy lines. I do know the PC is fine. cant figure out why the screen picture shows the start up pic and then looks like a tv with the antenna unhooked? I did check the cables.

The startup screen is low resolution and pops up with a standard driver. somehow when your installed video driver engages during startup, its parameters are not matched with your monitor. Try starting in safe mode so you can access your display settings in the control panel. Check the monitor instruction manual for usable settings of color, resolution (such as 1024 x 768) and refresh rates. Then set up the display driver to match an acceptable setup. You may have to reinstall the drivers for the video card that you have (it should have come with some floppies or a cd). lol

BIGO,

How do I start in safe mode? Is there an F KEY to hit or something?

This is right. In some instances, especially if you have loaded something on your pc the driver files and/or display settings get corrupted.Iwould suggest going to Device Manager and removing your display adapter( but first boot to safe mode and list the Type ofdisplay adaptor you have in case you have to have driver files) and letting windows re-install it. If the driver files are not corrupted it should solve your problem

When you start up the computer, press and hold the F8 key (for a couple of seconds) after the devices are recognized and before the starting win98 appears at the bottom of the screen, but you have to be quick because it goes by quick. Then press the number referring to safe mode.
When in safe mode, right click the my computer icon and left click on properties.
Click on Device Manager.

Thanks everyone! I did go to display and picked out the exact monitor and it works fine.
