Seems like a good combo to me. Some like 98,some don't. You need to try it and decide yourself. Nathan 04-06-1999, 03:14 AM Why would you want to use NT? There isn't very many programs written for it. It's a pure 100% business computer. kwai 04-06-1999, 06:27 AM because its more stable (relatively -- this is ms we're talking about). davage, as long as you are not going to be playing any games at all, and you have checked the hardware compatibility list, i would go with NT. you'll have a head start if/when win2000/nt5 comes out. Nathan 04-06-1999, 09:56 AM More stable? Yes! By how much...well... There are advantages both ways. Everyone wants a stable operating system, but the reason for the system is so you can run the apps that you want. There are times that the NT system may go down almost as often too. And there are many reasons why Windows crashes that has nothing to do with windows. Many times it's the poorly written programs that are the problem too. But the bottom line is, what applications are they going to be running? There is the dual boot opinion too! And that may make more sense. You can have the best of both worlds then. Just an additional thought. RobRich 04-07-1999, 12:53 AM -If you run standrd 32bit desktop applications, use WinNT. NT does allow for some games, but only ones compatible with DirectX 3.0 (DX 5 possible if you hack the OS and DirectX core). Some OpenGL games will also work, but many still have bugs. -If you don't care about stability and true multitasking (Win9x uses multi-threading, not really multitasking), and you want to play the latest and greatest games, go for a Win9x setup. Of them I prefer Win98, due to its better AGP support. -If you want a completely stable OS, and you don't care much for games, try Linux. I run SlackWare in dual boot config with Win98 on my personal system. It supports true multitasking and has excellent networking. Intel, HP, and SGI have parterned to develop a new Linux platform, which will be much easir to use. Expect it in the near future. kwai 04-07-1999, 07:14 AM that's why i said "this is ms we're talking about" http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif my understanding was that nt was better at shielding critical processes from bad code (as much as that can be done, at least). good point about the apps, though. forgot to ask besides "not games". so what apps do you want to run, davage? Nathan 04-07-1999, 02:00 PM That was my point. What do they want to do with NT? Maybe he wants to learn a new operating system or whatever. There could be many reasons why. I almost always ask that question first to see what they want to do. davage 04-07-1999, 02:52 PM My intentio is to run high end app like Pro/E, Matlab, Working model and another c++ program. Im afraid that NT will eat all my resouces or will not detect my k6 2 properly. Thanx for all ur suggestions. SysOpt.com
