Hi

I was just wondering how many of you here are doing this trough a modem or are you here through a LAN connection....?

I know that you lucky ones in America you all or at least many of you have already a fixed raid to pay I think per month (right or wrong..?) But for they rest of us here in Europe we have to pay for the minute...(phone bill + ISP)

Like I said I'm just wondering...... http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif

Bummer Thor :-( I'm connecting through a NIC and a cable modem. I love it (as opposed to dial-up connection), though I've used both in the past.

I have unlimited access at (supposedly 500Kb/sec) about 280 to 380 Kb/sec. About 35 to 45 KB/sec.

But with the lan, you have constant access to the 'net. I pay about $40.00US a month (I think) but, I don't need a second phone line, and I can download at anywhere from 5 to 10 times as fast as I did with my V.90 modem.

Hopefully your area will get something like this set up in the near? future. Hope so...

I think America On Line is like 20 or 25 US dollars a month for unlimited access. But if you connect through your own isp, it's only 9.95US. Which is what we do. My family likes AOL, but I rarely if ever use it myself.

Anyway, good luck, and keep us up to date about your access. What country do you live in?

Hope you have a really great holiday!

I'm connected through cable here in the US. The cable is the same that brings us 100 channels of **** on our TVs.

The connection is WAY fast (up to and sometimes over 100 times faster than a modem). And my connection is ALWAYS on, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. All this for $39(US) a month. We are kinda lucky here, aren't we?

About the only nice hing about the states, except maybee shipping. Cable, super fast, $40 per month, unlimited, I never even sign off anymore, except for when I have to shut down my computer to upgrade, or windoze locks up.

I live in the sticks of NW Ga. the phone lines here limit the modem to about 28k. The average download rate is about 2.0k/s, the really fast sites allow up to maybe 4-5k/s.

I’m one of those American’s who have been forsaken by the “powers” who have advanced high-speed connections around the country. I live ten miles from the nearest small town and forty miles from the nearest computer store

The best I can connect to my local phone line is 28.8 with a local telephone provider who has no plans in the next decade to upgrade the existing infrastructure. My prayer is that wireless high-speed communication continues to develop and that in it’s proliferation the cost comes down dramatically.

Otherwise, I’m just left with my dreams of fast access and quick download times.

Regards to All,

I basically live at work http://www.sysopt.com/forum/frown.gif So I quess I would qualify as having true "lan" type connections personally http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif (T3 to be exact..Got to love bandwith)

but as for home I am running modems. (dual diamond supra expresses...usually connected at around 96 to 104...not to shabby for analog modems http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif

I'm stuck with my V90. It actually connects at 115kbdps, so I'm not doing to badly! We don't even have DSL in Ireland.

alpha, If I'm not wrong(please anybody correct this if I'm misleading) then they connection speed that you are talking about "115kbdps"is the speed between your modem and PC and not to the network itself.

But anybody please correct me if I'm wrong about this.

Connecting through a modem here... pretty fast, usually 50.6kbps on my USR v.90 modem. Will hopefully soon be getting cable (as soon as the parents approve and the guys come to install it!), and I'm sure I won't be able to go back to dial-in once I do! Although I'm about 4000 feet from the local telephone switch, there aren't any DSL providers in my area yet http://www.sysopt.com/forum/frown.gif. Otherwise, I think that's the way I'd go.

That's my 2¢.

I connect to the WWW thru DSL, V.90 and Cable. Have a small LAN of 3 comps at home sharing a cable connection and 2 seperate computers using the DSL and V.90 connection. 3 comps are in my home office. Be interesting to find out how Satellite will pan out

I live in Australia and we are ripped off so badly with Internet Services!
I pay around $55 per month for unlimited (which is s**t slow. ie avg 2.5KB/s with packet loss up to 10%!!!)
We get CONSTANTLY disconnected (and pay AUS25¢ per call too > http://www.sysopt.com/forum/frown.gif
How do you guys ever get access to T1's and T3's is just unimaginable in a hole like Australia!
NEVER MOVE HERE!!!!! IT SUXXXXXXXXX!

LAN at work and 33.6 modem at home.

OutPatient - I agree with your assessment of Cable Content - remove the golf channel and all of the televangelists, you can keep the fishing shows and the majority of the sports stuff. Most of the prime time shows are garbage, or too filled with commercials to be worth watching. If it weren't for the movie channels, discovery channels, A&E, and a few others I wouldn't bother with cable at all. - Alas - my Video and DVD collection continues to grow. http://www.sysopt.com/forum/wink.gif
