*sigh*****

W2K
PIII 450 (default)
BX6-2

The KB is operable in the BIOS setup and in "DOS", and both KB & Mouse are operable on another box with a KVM hookup. But when I get to the W2K 'Log On to Windows' dialog prompt, the PW chars won't enter and no KB actions - like they're both dead. Nothing.

I've tried plugging the KB & Mouse directly into the PIII, as well. The KVM is on the correct switch. Cables are correctly cabled.

Doesn't work at Safe Mode, either.

Did a W2K Repair, and a reinstall.

I tend to think this might not be a hardware problem, as the KB works in the BIOS setup and there's no KB error at bootup. But I'm not sure. Haven't come across this one before.

I was playing around in the registry earlier deleting out an *expletive deleted* NAV app, and ended up doing a Repair and everything seemed ok til this .. so..

Help, links, ideas, suggestions, shotgun http://www.sysopt.com/forum/wink.gif are appreciated.

edit: I'm going to hook the Slave hdd up as Master and see if I can access the Log on.

Hi SoCalGal!

If I understand this right, you have your mouse and keyboard hooked into a KVM switch box. And that's so you can use the same keyboard, mouse, etc. on another system with each running at the same time if you wanted to do that, correct?

When you plug the rat and keyboard directly into the PC, does it work?

Was it working fine until you hacked the registy? Of was it ok after you rebooted for some time and this cropped up?

Is this a clone or brand name? If brand name, which one?

Hi Nathan http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif

Correct.

No.

Yes.

Well, after the registry hack I had STOP errors, etc. It was then I did attempted Recovery Console (which didn't work - didn't have all the files names}. Then I did a bootdisk-to-CD Repair (no cdrom.sys) and that appeared to work, until I got to the Log On prompt and no Rat/KB action. Then, I reinstalled. Then, I rebooted into Safe Mode, same thing. The system is now pretty much useless and sitting there...

Is this a clone or brand name? If brand name, which one?

I assume you're asking about the KVM? It's a Linksys 2-Port KVM. (Remember, I did plug the Rat & KB directly)

I hope it's not the mobo... but if it was the mobo, would I be still able to use the KB in the BIOS? and throught the Repair and Reinstall process?

Thanks, Nathan... hope you have something.

Of all the PC's I've repaired in my years, I haven't seen much of this stuff until recently. And it's mostly been on Gateway PC's, but a few other brands have had the same problem. I think it's a motherboard issue with the connections from both of the devices. Once we told Gateway what the problem was on the E-1400, they replaced the motherboard. And it took care of it. I probably seen that on some 20 motherboards out of 120 new PC's we deployed last year. Hehe...I'm the one that suggested we go with the Gateways and here we were having these same problems you were having. I thought this is great. These PC's are going to be a major major headache. And these were new one month old systems too. At least on those E-1400's you can change the motherboard in about 6 minutes flat. Strange thing is you plug a different mouse or keyboard into them, they will work sometimes or until you reboot 2 or 3 times. Anyway, I think it's a hardware issue with it. But why it works when it boots up and windows doesn't detect them when starting up, sure does beat me.

I would try a different keyboard and rat. See if it works for a little bit at least. Best I can offer.

Ok, I hooked up the Slave (old backup) drive as the Master and am able to use the KB/Rat at the Log On and enter.

At least it's working... http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif
