I have my scanner working .......but the dang thing is making a grinding noise and it has a bluish-green background now! One fire to another fire! Any help and if you need my fix buzz me.

Make sure the carriage lever is unlocked.

Had the same problem myself with a Scanjet 5100c. Seems it is "a known mechanical problem".
I had to return the machine to HP, it took them two goes to fix it.

The goofy thing worked until I loaded W/2000 and then it crashed my toy. Now I have the drivers and settings(?) right and I now get the grinding noise. I unlocked it about a dozen times, so I do not beleive it was that. The blue tint on the scan is new too! Thanks for the suggestions. I hope their is the answer out there in cyber land.

You have to pull the lever lock out until there is a distinct snap and it is flush with the side.
