Recently got a great deal on a Maxtor 20 gig hard disk and now I'm trying to install the Maxtor on my system as a slave behind a WD 6.4 as master on IDE 1. Two CD-ROM(s) already take up IDE-2 and work fine with the existing WD. I've been sucessful at geting the bios (Award) to recognize the master slave setup but Win98 doesn't report any drive assignment. Does anyone have a clue???
Any help greatly appreciated.

thanks,
wmr

Did you format and fdisk it? Set the jumper for slave?

Yes I set the Maxtor as a slave and set the bios to AUTO. In the boot cycle the Wd is recognized as the master and the Maxtor comes up as having been recognized as the slave. No I can't get to the Fdisk stage. What now?

thanks

Do you have a boot disk? If so set CMOS to boot from the A drive. Fdisk and format it, make sure you transfer the system files also.

It's getting late, you can also press F8 on the power up, that will take you to a screen, select command prompt only, press enter

Yup, as Topflite says, you can't fdisk from within Windows. It's a DOS command.

Actually, from within windows click

'start'
'run'
then type 'fdisk' & it will work from there. You can only do this if it not your 'c' drive you are trying to fdisk.
