I just got a mobo off ebay. Its an Intel 440BX Slot 1 with an AGP slot. A few months ago I bought a used AGP card (Intel 740 2X) but never tested it. Trouble is, I don't know whether the baord is bad or the AGP card. I put the card in the mobo I just received, fired it up but the screen is completely black No post no error codes, nothing but black screen. CPU fan spins, lights on the HDD, the floppy and CD all go on briefly, but the screen stays pitch black.
I took the AGP card out and stuck in an ISA video card that I know works and still absolutely nothing. I'm a novice, so before I complain to the seller about a bad board, I wanted to ask, to make sure that my test was a valid one. Should an ISA video card work in a board with an AGP slot or must I go out and locate another AGP card in order to find out Whether I've got a bad board or a bad AGP card.

Put it in the ISA slot and fire it up. If you don't get anything on the monitor, you've either got a bad monitor or bad mobo. To run the system using the ISA card you're going to have to enable it in the BIOS Peripherals or Advanced section.

I have an ancient ISA bus video card that I once counted upon to ALWAYS work ... until recently. Last time I tried it, no go. So it's iffy whether an old ISA card will work in a new board. HOWEVER, if you get the EXACT same symptoms with both cards, I would suspect the mobo. SOMETHING should be different between the two cards, even if they both fail. They should fail differently.

The thing is, the card has to WORK before you can change the BIOS.

What I would suggest is that you get your hands on a PCI bus card that you know works. Maybe you can borrow one for a few hours. If it fails also, then the mobo is shot.

Well, I didn't try a PCI card, but I did pull another ISA card out of another older working pc I have and the screen is still black. I guess that means I've got a bad board eh?
