Doing clean install. PnP doesn't find modem, and when I try to install software, the install wizard doesn't show any com ports. When I check the ports in the Device Manager,
I only find the LPT ports.
Using Win98 FE. Installing Motorola 56m modem, which usually goes in easy.
Is there a way to add com ports? ... over!

Are you running Win98? If so go to control panel, add hardware, add com ports. You might need a 98 cd. Win will add com ports. Did you config. modem jumpers setting for a particular com port?

Pnp doesn't have jumpers, does it? I could be wrong though.

If there are no COM ports in the device manager then it sounds like they are disabled in BIOS. Are they?
KMBALO, PnP=Plug and Pray, I mean it is Plug and Play, darn habbits.

Be sure that your com ports are enabled in the bios. Also, I have installed modems that were recognized as "PCI communication device" and had to delete that and go into a manual install of the modem by picking from the list offered by Windows.
Motorola SM56 is a PCI modem, which means that it assigns it's own virtual COM, usually COM3 on system with already configured two PHYSICAL COM ports. If you have no COM ports at all, as you say, so might be disabled in BIOS, check it under some kind of "Periheral/PnP" tag, and configure them to use AUTO settings. This way, you'll have two COM ports, and Windows should detect first your new COM ports (you'll probably need Win98 CD), then your modem at next COM and install it without too much trouble. If it doesn't, goto Start/Settings/Control Panel/Add New Hardware, and let Windows search throught your all system ...
Hope it will work.

On newer modems, you usually have to install the software that comes with the modem before physically installing the modem.

WE DID IT ... as soon as I installed a couple of ports through the New Hardware app, PNP found the modem and we're AOK.
Thanks for all the help and caring.

I am having a somewhat related problem. I installed a USR PCI Winmodem. The installation of the software went ok. No conflicts appear in Device Mgr. I have only one COM1, BIOS is set to AUTO detect.
However, being a Winmodem, Windows assigned a COM2. I did an Add New Hardware. Windows did not find it. So, I tried adding a COM2. Unsuccessful, even with W98SE cd. Where and how can I find and add COM2?
Thanks...

If you'll read the suggestions I got in replies, you'll see that all you have to do is click in the little bullet so you can "see a list of hardware" ... then click on the item that says "Ports".
Also, when you install a winmodem, you need to install the software before you install the modem. You may have to remove the software first in "Add - remove", and start all over. ... Good luck.
