PIII-600 is enough for software decoding of dvds. Just play the dvd and it will work fine.

I use SoftDVD Max. I cant remeber off the top of my head the name of the company but i did get it in a compusa. I have no problems with the software, plays my DVDs great! I have also read that WinDVD is also supposed to be pretty good.

My pioneer player came with powerdvd software from cyberlink,I installed a hollywood plus decoder card just to free up some cpu cycles and run the pic to a large screen T.V.

Didn't your player come with software? I use WinDVD myself, but, any of the above mentioned progams should do nicely.

Dvd decoders can use over 90% of system resources so dont plan on doing anything else while watching also with software decoders they tend to skip frames your system has a lot of ram and good speed so you shouldn't have that much of a problem but if you want the best performance get a decoder card. They run about $60 on pricewatch.
P.S. how do you like your pioneer? is it noisy?

I would recomend a hardware decoder over a software decoder anyday, especially if you wish to hook your dvd up to a Digital/ DTS reciever, far better experience watching dvds with this combo. I have a dxr2, however I have heard that the cinemaster and hollywood decoders are better.
