I got my ftp server up and running at work. It is primarily for people to upload their webpages, but it hardly gets used. I put 3dmark2000 and will be putting corel linux on it tommorow. It should be fairly fast. I am wanting to get some traffic on it to see how it holds up. I am open to putting other stuff on it as well, as long as it is in accordance with the Universities guidlines. It is at 129.118.41.158 let me know how it works because I am on a 56k modem and can't see how fast it is.

It is kind of strange. I cant seem to get browsers to connect to it. You need an ftp client. Any ideas on how to make a browser connect?

I guess I need to work on it some more http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif what ftp client are you using so that I can test it with that? I just made an http alias to the ftp directory so files can be downloaded that way while I figure this out. Thanks for your help.

I tried it with both WS-FTP (LE version) and CUTEFTP (full version)

I will try it again when I get home...actually getting out of here early tonight (just have to monitor the systems from home now!)

Are you behind a firewall at work? I can't connect to it when I have blackice running.

Hey bdog hope you are having fun with the FTP server...

As for Corel Linux, I just took the delux edition out of the box today and I was very disappointed. I thought that being that it was from Corel that it would be of the highest quality, but it was a bummer.

The GUI is very clean, and their file manager is very nice, but there are the problems I had with it:

1. They tried to simplify the install to the point that it was confusing, first it would not install over my existing Linux root and swap partitions (every other version will) I had to delete them and let Corel Linux instlall in to the free space and create its own root and swap partitions. Install was also slow and I had to toggle between the "back" and "next" several times to make the selected options menus show up.

2. One step backwards - my sound card was not supported by the OSS drivers (Ensoniq Audio PCI es1371), in fact, running the OSS config caused the system to lockup on reboot, causing me to force reboot to command line and rm-r the $%#^ OSS directory in order to get back to the GUI.

3. The default ppp script caused dialup to disconnect right after connecting every time.

MY conclusion is that this was a nice attempt by Corel, but hastily released. On the bright side, I got the full version of WP8, Civilization for Linux, and a nifty foam rubber Penguin for $79. ..I should try to take this back to the store.

I have none of these problems with Caldera Open Linux 2.2 or 2.3, in fact OL2.3 even detected and tested my sound cards on install. In addition, Caldera comes with a wealth of file management tools.

One Linux bummer, almost no USB support and no Ultra ATA66 support - present kernels cannot see the hard drive on ATA66 systems, and therefore will not install. Caldera OL2.3 does have a usb module but I havent been able to get it to install.

Hey bdog I tried your FTP server and created a directory named "test" and uploaded an animated icon. It was quite fast even on my 28.8k modem. After I was done I wanted to delete the folder and couldn't. And is okay so nobody messes around with your files. So delete the folder or see the icon if you want to http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif

I was using cuteftp and it connected without any complain or hick-up. Aren't you using a firewall? If so check the firewall setting under CuteFTP and enable PASV mode to see if it help you or configure the whole stuff in that section of CuteFTP.

Thanks for the help in testing it out. Is this you mntsnow?

Just wondering because I got a telnet port scan from an IP registered to this company and I thought it might have been you trying to get the ftp to work.

Paradeath, where can I get bulletproof ftp?

I tried with the host type set to UNIX and the directory did not list. I then set the host type to autodetect and it worked fine.

Yeah, it is a NT based server http://www.sysopt.com/forum/frown.gif so must use auto detect. I just finished putting some cool files on there: cacheman, bulletproof ftp, adobe acrobat, 3dwinbench2000, 3dmark2000,netscape 4.7, rambooster, sandra, v3overclocker, winsystem, diskeeperlite. My first download of corel linux got corrupted so it will probably be next week before I put it on there.
