I am trying hard to install a hsp 56 micromodem in my computer and it came with a disk, however it says it is unable to locate the drivers needed? Could it be possible that winme will not allow a older pci card? I have downloaded drivers also and that did not work. It is driving me crazy! I thought WinMe would recognize everything and just kinda install just about everything. The disc that came with the modem says Win2000 but not WinMe? could this os just not work with older pci cards?

This may be just my opinion, but an HSP micromodem is the crappiest modem you can get. They have all sorts of disconnect problems and slow connect speeds. If you want a decent modem I would go with a USR or just about anything that is external and connects to the serial port. The externals will give you a much more stable connection and probably at a better rate too. Just my .02 worth.

captpete,
I went to the microsoft site as you said . I found the pctel hsp56 micromodem in there tested hardware section. I still dont know if that means they have tried it with 'ME ' and it is suppose to work? maybe I just could not find the right area on the web site to download a upgraded driver or something. Thanks

It may not be compatible with Win Me. Go here to check. http://microsoft.com/windowsME/upgrade/compat/default.asp

Hi,
The installation of some hardware devices requires the user to install the software first. This is common with modems and scanners. This is not always the case though. For example, a HP scanner that I installed for my brother required me to install the software first. Once I shut the computer down and connected the scanner leads I switched on the power for the scanner and it was found without any problems - you might need to use the CD supplied again though during the new hardware found process. With the HP printer I was require to connect the printer to the computer (power off of course) prior to any software installation of drivers and the like; switch on the power for the printer and power up the computer. The new hardware process (using the CD supplied where needs be) went normally (no crashes etc). It found the printer with no problems.

The point I making is that all hardware is different within and between manufacturers on the ways the software and hardware devices should be installed. The instructions should have clarified this for you. If you've followed the instruction then it may be that there are other issues pertaining to your problem device.

It's always worth reading about any future purchases in order that potential problems are avoided. The response by Darvocet that 'HSP micromodem is the crappiest modem you can get' may be an important point to consider. A single review etc is no grounds to accept or not a particular piece of software or hardware but the purchaser can nevertheless make a more informed and intelligent purchase. It limits the exposure to frustrating experiences, which computers have a knack of generating.

I hope the first part of my reply is of help to you. If not, good luck anyway.

All the best,
G

I had a PCTel HSP MicroModem in my new computer when I first got it. I could get it to work, but it showwed that it didn't have the wave tables. I finally found and installed them, at:http://members.cnx.net/reboot/modems/

It worked okay, but not as fast as my old modem in the kids computer. http://www.sysopt.com/forum/frown.gif I finally switched modems with the kids! http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif Now I don't have any problems and they don't go on-line much and they're just happy to be able get on-line!

I installed one of these for a friend not too long ago, and if I remember correctly, you have to install the drivers (software) first, then power down and install the modem. Windows will then detect and find the drivers itself.

Good Luck http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif
