Can anyone tell me if Office 2000 is backwards compatible with Office 97? I know you can save a file in "97" format but if I save it in the "2000" format will it open in Office 97? Specifically word and excel.

Yes, office 2000 is backward compatible.
But no, office 97 will not be able to open
an office 2000 document. If it did, it would make 97 forward compatable.

An office 2000 program will let you open a document made on any version prior to version 2000 but only lets you save it as version 2000 or version 97.

Dave H, is pretty close on his answer. The main place he is incorrect is with Office2000 you can save the document not only as a office2000 or word97 file you can save it as
wordperfect files
word for macintosh
Works 4 and 5
msdos text
rich text
and many others. All you have to do is click on the "down"arrow inside the "save as type" box. It will pull up a box that will allow you to choose MANY different formats so that others can also use the files you create http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif

jman01pa,
This is something that really bugs me about
the office programs, it's there way of trying to get people to upgrade I think.
I have office 2000 and one of my employees still has office 97, we both use word and publisher a lot. For me to get a document from her is easy, I can open it and save it into my computer. For me to give her a document, I have to use the save-as, then save it as a '97 document. Then I can e-mail it to her. Of course then I have to delete the '97 version from my computer so I don't get confused, and it would be a waste to have two versions taking up space.

Now imagine what happens with a document that
has to go back and forth between us a few times before it is done! (another employee and I were doing this so much, I bought her a 2000 version).

Thanks Mr. Gates http://www.sysopt.com/forum/frown.gif
Dave

Edit-
Mntsnow is absolutly correct, you can save as
several different formats, I was thinking of
a word document for a word program, sorry.

well i have office 2000 at home and there is office97 at school. I wrote some documents at home and took them to school to print them because i have no printer as of yet. office97 opened the office2000 docs just fine. i suspect that it would not be able to open the options only available to 2000, but that is my two cents....

Yes, most of the applications are compatible with Office 97 and Lotus and Wordperfect, etc. However, I had some problems with Frontpage 97, 98 and Frontpage 2000. The first time I loaded Frontpage 2000 messed up my previous web pages. It was the only problem I had.

I had been aware of the ability to to open other versions with 2000 but was just hopin that 97 could read the 2000 without 2000 saving it as a 97 file.

We have many pc's and most have office 97 on them. Our corporate office is now distibuting 2000. That dont make sense to me. Most of the users are not computer literate at all.

I thank everyone for there thoughts.

I have 97 at work, and 2000 at home. I've sent things from home and opened them fine here. I think you'll have problems with macros and such, but if it's just text, you shouldn't have any problems.
