Dear MntSnow,
I would like to buy a cable modem but I don't know what to buy and how to evaluate one. What should I look for in a cable modem, what's good and what's not ? Can you please help me and suggest one that is good and why ?

Regards
Chary

chary: I just purchased a cable modem. I've had cable modem service through cox@home for a couple of years and decided it was time since I probably could've purchased two by now. What I did was call @home tech support to see what cable modems they were providing their customers. Currently they're providing 3. The Motorola CyberSurfer Wave, one from Best Data and another from Toshiba called the PCX1100. As with all computer hardware, a standard has finally been adopted with cable modems called DOCSIS. Eventually all cable providers will be using this standard if not already. I opted to buy the Toshiba PCX1100 as it looks like @home will replace all the Motorola cable modems with these. Another thing I learned is it's not the easiest purchase to make on the web. for example, pricewatch.com doesn't offer a lot of vendors. I ended buying direct from Toshiba here:http://www.toshiba.com/taisnpd/products/pcx1100.html
I really couldn't tell if there was any difference in speeds between the various products but I'd go with whatever your cable provider intends to go with. The technology doesn't appear to change very fast.

Dear TLWhite76,
Thanks a lot for the information. My cable provider is providing the Toshiba PCX 1100 and some other model from DLink and DAX,but I guess I can go ahead and by the Toshiba one.

But don't buy it from your cable provider, suggest going direct to Toshiba. It'll be at least $50-$60 less.
