Does anyone have any ideas for speeding up a socket 7 system. I would prefer a good balance between performance boost and cost, although a significant performance increase at little cost would also be welcome. The system I have is based on an AMD K6-2/450 with 128MB PC100 SDRAM. Graphics is handled by an 8MB I740 AGP Intel 3D accelerator. I'm not a games player, mainly used for web surfing, office work, burning CDs etc. The O/S I'm using is Win98 2nd edition. Using the motherboard (Gigabyte GA-5AA, an AT style board) chipset drivers hasn't really helped. I'm also plagued by random lockups, ALT-CTRL-DEL has no effect so I have to use the reset button. Thanx

two recommendations. Upgrade to 98Lite. http://www.98lite.net

If your system will support 2.0 volts change the CPU to a K6-3+/450. I have a bunch of them running at 600 with no problems.

98lite solved all the lockup problems I was having. and the K63+ chip has L2 cache onboard and is based on a smaller die. It overclocks great.
