almost had a $140.00 heart attack today! i got a new 13.5 gig hd about a month ago, and today i was really doing a LOT of stuff on the drive at the same time - way more than i have before. well, it was thrashing away, and then all of a sudden, CLICK - (sound of drive spinning up) - CLICK - and my comp froze up. you should have seen me - i was frantically (after rebooting) trying to backup everything to another comp at my home LAN before my drive crashed - i got the same clicking problem a few more times. anyways, after some more investigating, i figured out that the HD was overheating. i took the case off, and it was frickin HOT. so, as a temp fix i left the case off, and it is working just fine again. did a surface scan, and luckily no sectors were damaged, and all my data is still intact. so, i guess we all know what i will be buying next time i go to a comp store - A HARD DRIVE COOLER!!!! anyways, i am just so happy now that my drive isnt going ka-put that i just had to share my story with everyone http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif

I hate to be a messenger of Doom, but even without the cooler it should not get that hot it freeses, a cooler may keep it going but some thing don't sound right.

well, the same type of thing happened to a hard drive i had in the past, and i stuck a couple case fans underneath it, and it ran perfectly until i got rid of it like a year later. maybe the inside of my case is too hot or something - i only have 1 case fan blowing out the back, and i have my p3 500 overclocked to 560. i dont know - im just gonna keep a backup of my hard drive and renew it every week or so, so that in case it does **** out, ill have all my info, and then ill get IBM to give me a new one...
The only drives I've ever heard of needing drive coolers are 10k rpm scsi units and older 7.5k rpm ones. Even with overclocking...it really shouldn't be doing that. Before you buy a drive cooler you might want to try getting a cheap adapter and sticking it up in a 5 1/2" bay. I know heat rises, but generally the ps fan should get the hot air.

I sympathize with your plight, I’ve overheated a hard drive and lost data, it's devastating.
I went shopping for a cooler at the beginning of this year and decided, hey why not also step up and buy a removable hard drive system. However, in an “effort” to save money, I purchased some piece of plastic, single fan, low dollar model. When the system crashed, I removed the HD from the casing and it was so hot you couldn’t touch it.

its still going good so far - running without the case on i mean. nothing has happened in the last 24 hrs or so - and ive been running a surface scan the whole time to really work the drive and see if it will do it again. i will probably move it up to a 5 1/2 in bay - also found out too that i dont have any case fans - i forgot i had taken them out and put them in other comps... so i thinking (hopefully) that it was just getting too hot in there for it. ill let you all know if it ever does **** out tho. but until then, i guess im running without a case!
(everyone keep your figers crossed for me! http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif)

I overheated IDE drives twice before, once by using one of those cheap removable drive boxes - no fan and almost no air circulation; and once by having a couple of drives and a floppy stacked too closely - the sandwitched drive almost smoked.

I think I fried a 408mb drive. I put it directly under my WD cariar 2.1gb and it stopped working. Wouldn't work with FDISK in windows, worked with FDISK in dos, when I'd FDISK'd it in dos, it wouldn't work in windows. Or something like that.
What do you suppose is the average life span of a hard drive? I leave my computer on 24/7, but the powersave feature turns off the hd after an hour or so, but one of the drives is almost 3 years old. Should I worry about it going out soon?
