I can not get my GNOME desktop to run

it gives me a

Gtk** Warning: Cannot Load Display


what does this mean, and how can I fix it?

I have seen your post more than once and I would be more than happy to help you, but I always use KDE and have no experience with Gnome... so you could try KDE instead of Gnome or any other Window Manager for X.

If they don't work too then it's a misconfigurated X-Server. Type xf86config and reconfigure the X-Server to select the correct video card and monitor.

Try reconfigurating X anyway maybe it's what is wrong with Gnome.
