I have just installed a new ECS K7VZA motherboard w/AMD ATLON 1GHz. I get the machine to post 75% of the time. When it does it performs the memory checks and detects the hard drive/floppy just to hang at a 'CMOS checksum error - Defaults loaded' message. Under that I get the 'Press F1 to continue, DEL to enter setup'.

A couple of times I have managed to enter the bios, however, use of the keyboard causes the system to hang at random. I have tried a different memory module, different keyboard, different floppy and clearing the CMOS, but to no avail.

In one particular case I managed to enter the bios 'PC Health' option and left the system running for about an hour. All seemed to work well and the CPU Fan speed/temperatures were being updated. As soon as I tried further navigation the system hung again.

Any suggestions as to what is happening or what I can try next ?

Thanks,
James.

If the system is getting CMOS checksum errors , and is hanging in the BIOS menus, it sure sounds like a bad MB.

Try pulling all the drives and cards except processor, memory, and video. If you still can't navigate BIOS without it hanging, it might be time for an RMA.
