EDIT ON
I apoligize now about the title of the thread, I though I changed it. It was supposed to read 'Star Wars I Issues'
EDIT OFF

socalgal,
I am assuming that will not offend many, but if it does, please make it disappear. That being said...

<soapbox>

This rant is concerning a certain character in the the movie whose name 'rhymes' http://www.sysopt.com/forum/wink.gif with Jar-Jar Binks.

Before this becomes a I hate Jar-Jar... Jar-Jar should die... thread, read my view on his speech.

A great deal of people have problems with the way in which Jar-Jar speaks. I admit he does sound like someone performing a bad impression from the islands. Seems to me that the Viceroy sounded like someone doing a bad impression from the far east. In regards to the accents, Lucas is only so creative. He has to create a lot for these movies. After a while, he must have to draw upon things he has seen or heard in real life. I am sure he does this without really thinking about it.
Look at Star Trek and Babylon Five... quiet everyone http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif, it does not matter which is better, but there are similar charcteristics int he races...

Another issue was Jar-Jar's grammar... yes it was bad. Then again Elmo also has bad grammar and he is an educational tool ( for us old school people the Cookie Monster didn't speak that well either).

The speech issue also has another angle. Yoda, the wisest and most respected charcter in the whole bloody film spoke horrible english. Jabba, R2, and Chewie didn't even speak english. But I guess everyone has to complain about something... and with that

I hated jarjar, lucas did terrible on him. Ruined a movie that would have been PERFECT without him/her-whatever the thing was!
Don't mock crying... I force myself to cry so my tear ducts will remain well lubed http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif

Apostle 83,
I know you and many other people hated Jar-Jar, but I wanted to address all of the media **** (at least here in the U.S.) about his speech. I extremely dislike Jar-Jar as well, but I think the speech thing was out of control... hmm...maybe it was a way to cover up the fact that we all were not happy with him so we started to pick on him (just like junior high http://www.sysopt.com/forum/wink.gif)

I wish they had provided subtitles for the leader of Jar Jar’s clan; between jiggling of his jowls and all that spitting, I couldn’t understand much. http://www.sysopt.com/forum/wink.gif

It think it's just laziness rather than anything malicious. However, it does seem coincidental that certain racial steroetypes seem to match up with the accents.
Jar Jar Binks, Boss Ness etc are clumsy, stupid, socially inept and speak with what I guess is Creole/Bahamian/Caribbean English accents to reflect their laid-back society.
The ruthless and treacherous trading guild is undoubtedly Chinese/Japanese/Korean inspired - even the clothes hint at that.
And the only people speaking unaccented English are an Irish and a Scottish actor. Oh, and of course all Hollywood bad guys speak with an English accent - Palpatine for example (boy we get a hard time! - if you want REALLY evil, use an English character actor sigh).
If it wasn't such a cheap plot, I'm sure all bad guys would speak with German accents and salute with outstretched arms. Maybe Lucas is saving that treat for when the evil Empire gets started up. Remeber, the Nazis invented stormtroopers.

Yoda, of course, eats matzos and is celebrating Hannukkah right now.

Funny how it wasn't even a problem in the first three films - made-up languages and subtitles were FAR better. The accent problem stems from dumbing down the film for kids (and it IS a kids' film!) who have injested too much sugar and caffeine and are too hyped up to read subtitles.

How many of you political correctness sell-out brain-washes watch "MAD" TV with delight, enjoy "The Simpsons," and chuckle at "The PJs?" Need I mention a show called "In Living Color?"

These shows are all replete with sterotypes - so what? Our differences as individuals and our distinct social charecteristics are what make us unique. There are always exceptions, but we humans need to generalize and catagorize. It is a harsh and sad society that cannot laugh at itself. I only feel threatened by something if I am insecure to begin with.

I loved Jar-Jar, his people, and all the sterotyping - it wasn't well hidden, it was obivously done on purpose, and it kept me in stiches throughout the movie. I could relate.

As far as sterotyping goes I think it should refer to using two keyboards at once!

One last cheap shot, just a test to see if any of you USA people are truely above sterotyping: If I say, "A certain group of people always leave beer cans and dirty diapers behind at camp grounds," does that bring any culture to your mind?

Let's get on with life!

CMonster,

That was my point. I laughed at Jar-Jar, and sometimes with him. I did not like him, but I did not wish him dead (as many people did).

Also the ENTIRE idea behind this thread was that the criticisms (sp?) against Jar-Jar were too harsh. It may not seem like it, but I am on Jar-Jar's side.

I defended him to my friends, and said that he was a good element of the movie. Amoung other things his was the first all digital actor( yes, yes I realize they had a real life actor to map the face onto _sometimes_ ).

Cmonster, I agree that the shows you mentioned are funny, and I know that there is noone above stereo-typing, my take on this was that Jar-Jar should have been left alone. Another great show is Southpark, whose opnion must be to offend all (that way noone can complain about being picked on).

I also disagree with some people arguing that the use of the small dog in Taco Bell is offensive to the people of Chihauha (sp?). The small dog comes from the far east, NOT from anywhere in North America

the fact that they don't use perfect english grammer is not important, it's a film, not an english lesson, how many people do we know in real life that use perfect english, even on this board it shows that life is diverse and so is interp of language, the fact that Jar Jar speaks they way he does just adds to the film (imagine him coming over or sounding like Prince Charles, any one for plums) also if I remeber right Jar Jar's overlord was the voice of English Actor Brian Blessed, if you have the ear for his English regional dwang, he sounds just the same in real life! http://www.sysopt.com/forum/wink.gif

Anybody pay money to see it a second
time to figure out what they were
saying?

I paid to see it a second time because I wanted to confirm that three of the senators shown in the movie looked like “ET” (the movie character not the television show).

If you watch the film, during the time when the Princess is before the senate, one of the wide-angle shots shows a group of three senators that all like identical to ET.
