I know i've done this before. Can't figure it out now. A friend has a dial-up modem. His phone has a distinctive dial tone if messages are waiting on his voice mail.
I go to Control Panel > System > Device Manager > Modem > Connection - I turn off WAIT FOR DIAL TONE BEFORE DIALING.
Result - Dial up connection fails.
What have I missed?

I don't know the answere to your question but I am curious why you have to set this option. My phone has a unique sound when I have messages but this dosen't affect my dial-up modem.

srcfish - Under Connection > click Advanced button. In the "Extra Settings" field, type: X1
This disables dial tone detection.
Sabbath - depending on the modem, voice mail tones often result in "no dial tone detected" messages.

Tried filling in the extra settings box like you said. Oddly, I can't find an apply button!!
As soon as I exit the modem window the X1 setting disappears?
Any hints?
