in my tasks window when I press cntl+alt+del. But when I boot up, only Explorer and Systray load. So what is this Mdm thing? And why it starts running by itself? Thanks.

M.

MDM should be your winmodem software. It's completely normal and should be running if you want to use your modem.

Nope. It's the parasitic Debug software Microshaft puts in w/some software installation. Use Msconfig to find where it's loading & stop it, or better, delete it -- it's Mdm.exe. Look here:

There are other files that work in hand along with the mdm.exe file you have found. Rpcss.exe is another one to delete, as will as loadwc and webcheck.dll. I read a post from a guy who claimed to be a former Microsoft employee, who stated that the above files were part of a spyware thing that reported serial numbers (piped through OE)of installed software and were stored in a data base along with your other info you sent along to Microsoft when you registered your MS products. He said by 2005 it would be fully implemented, and anyone who's serial numbers for the software is not right, you will be busted. I don't know the legitimacy of his statements, but it sounds a little to much like something the Third Reich would do, so just in case it was true I deleted the above files from my system (Win98se) and have not had any problems. I have read that people running NT/2000 are not so lucky, it causes problems. http://www.cexx.org/rpcss.htm If you should want to find the original thread it was on one of the newsgroups on GRC about a month or so back. Look for threads with RPCSS in them.

BFlurie is correct. I mistook it for another app. It will be listed under MSConfig as Machine Debugger. You can get rid of everything in the startup tab, except System Tray.
