I have a modern computer with plenty of hard drive space, but due to the volatility of my work, I'm constantly having to reformat. I'm looking into either a CD-R or CD-RW drive. First, it has to be cheap--$350 or less. Second, it has to be fast--less than 30 minutes a disk, and able to be run (possibly?) on a 75mhz Pentium. Lastly, (the clencher) it has to be external. Unless, of course, it's improbable that I'll ever get it to work on that P I pig. If anyone thinks they can help, it'd be greatly appreaciated.
If all else fails, I just want an external writer I can leave writing backup files and music CD while I go to school.
Thanks,
Adam

Hi, AdamS! Please, look at pricewatch.com You may get a good idea about the price range for an external cd recorder and rewritable. I do own a Mitsumi cd recorder and I do the backups from there. It is an ineternal cd-r and only paid $189.00 Please, avoid Memorex. I like the Yamaha, Hps and Plextor. Make sure that the software is the Cd-Creator. It is an excellent software and very easy to use.

AdamS,

You might have problems with a 75 Mz Pentium. I think most CDRs require 100+ Pentium. External is not a problem. Before you buy make sure that it will run on your system.

I would suggest that you use your money to get a new processor / mobo. A decent celeron based combo will only cost you $150.00.

I too would suggest a processor \mb upgrade before getting a cd-r.I have had the chance to use a coupla ricoh external scsi cdrw's and these seem to be very stable and reliable.the one we use at work makes around 15 burns a day and will fail about once every month and this is usually user or software errors.
