let's say I get an Adaptec 2940U2W (ultra 2 wide) would that mean that every SCSI device I connected to it would have to be an ultra 2 wide device?

Short answer is NO http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif But (doesnt there always seem to be a but? LOL)
If you place a ultrawide (not uw2) device on the uw2 chain everything will run at the uw spec and not the uw2 spec. But also most uw2 boards come with 2 connectors 1 that is uw2 and one that is standard 50 pin scsi http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif so you can keep the slowest devices off of your fastest channel http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif

thanks Mntsnow,

here's another question for you SCSI guru's.
I'm looking at getting a Plextor CD-RW drive and when I run checks on pricewatch and killerapp I keep seeing two versions of each drive

1. w/pci
2. w/sw

I am assuming that the one that says w/pci means that it comes with a SCSI controller card and that the w/sw version means that it comes with software. Does this mean that the one with the controller does not come with any software? Are the Plextor SCSI cards even any good? If I had my choice I think I would rather get an Adaptec. Thanks guys and gals.

For the most part it is better to just get the "sw" bundle and then buy your scsi card seperately ( I have heard of to many people getting "no name" brand scsi cards with the "pci" bundles (the pci bundles are supposed to have a scsi card AND software with the drive)

I can tell you from personal experiance that the PLEXTOR cdrom's and burners are AWESOME!
you can see what I have in my system by visiting my Website (http://www.aros.net/~mntsnow/benchmarks.html)
