Thank-you! scotter 12-10-1999, 10:47 PM check the user reviews here at sysopt there might be something there if you have'nt yet http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif plucky duck 12-11-1999, 05:21 PM Now here's another bargain I picked up, this time at future shop. Along with some other stuff onsale as clearance at the time, I picked up a brand-new 32x Sony UDMA CDROM for only $35CDN or about $20 USD less the 10% scratch'n'save coupon. Just a few weeks ago at another store I picked up an almost new (2 month old) Hollywood Plus Decoder card for only $50 CDN or $35 USD, now are those incredible deals or what?! What a lucky guy 'eh? Wonder what other bargains I'll walk into next, a P!!!-733mhz for $199?! Sorry, just had to brag a bit. brandon184 12-11-1999, 07:47 PM I've already checked the reviews, and it doesn't have this cd-rom. If someone could go to http://www.artecusa.com/product/computer/cd50x-e.htm just to tell me if this cd-rom drive has some good specs. plucky duck 12-11-1999, 08:52 PM I've read the specs, 120ms is average (assuming what was stated is referring to fullstroke), UMDA support is a plus, 19x minimum transfer rate is OK for today's apps unless you do lots of file transfers to and fro the cdrom to the hard drive, the ability to read CDR and CDRW is also a big plus. Sounds good to me so far. Other things to consider is the vibration level the cdrom makes when it's at a high spindle state, as my 24x Acer rumbles horribly loud as though it was a rumble pack. Another thing to consider, although this may be a non-issue to many others, is origin of manufacture. I mainly buy products that are mainly manufactured Japan, USA, Canada, Malaysia, and the exception being Taiwan, to ensure that I'm getting top quality components for my dollar. Anyways, that's my take on it. Hope this helps. Sony products were mostly made in Japan back in the good old days, not now though as most are made in China and other third-world countries in order to cut back on costs, but unfortunately quality at the same time, sigh.....
