Thanks for everyones help so far, but I'm still drawing a blank.

I've installed Win98 on a formatted disk and I repeatedly get an SUWIN error. I've tried installing Win95 - this installs then hangs on the reboot after installation. Same for Win 3.1 and MS_DOS 6.22 (I've tried everything!)

The problem seems to be the HIMEM.SYS file. The system cannot locate it under any of the operating systems, even though it is in the Windows directory and entered in the Config.sys file. This error stops the bootup of the Win95 and Win3.1 OS's and is probably the cause of the Win98 crash. I have reinstalled the himem.sys file repeatedly to no avail.

Many thanks in advance for any advice offered. I am trying to write a thesis at the moment (which is why I upgraded my computer - and now wished I hadn't.)

Please keep the all the posts under one heading. That way other who read this don't have to search all over to read the history of what's done.

Is this a brand name machine or clone?

It does sound like a virtual memory related problem.

Is your copy of Windows95 and Win98 upgrade versions?

Where do you stand now as far as the installation is concerned?

Are you willing to start over or not?

Sorry about the separate posting, but I thought that now I know (think?) that it is a HIMEM problem I thought I'd use a new heading.

It's a computer I have built myself. PII-Celeron 366, 2.5 Gig HD, 64 Meg Ram.

All operating systems are original, not upgrades. Win 98 installation hangs when 'Create A System Disk' request box appears. 95 and 3.11 install but won't reboot due to "unreliable XMS
memory at address (memory address)"
I'm willing to start over...I've formatted my HD 6 times already.

I've found problems exactly the same as mine littered around the Net. Unfortunately nobody has replied to them, looks like a relatively common problem.

Who makes the BIOS for the motherboard?

How have you been starting the installation of WIN98, from the floppy or cd?

Thanks for the replies. I've got it sussed now. It was a bad memory module.

I'm now only running on 32Mb, but at least I'm running!
