compaq P200 $580(can't get a hold of classified ad owner so I don't know how much mem, HD size etc.)
but 580 seems pretty cheap for a pent 200

hitachi p180, HD 2.0gb, 16 ram, $475

compaq pent2 366 14.1 xga, 64mb, 6GB, 24x cd, office 2000 $1550

the last one is kinda out of range but my parents might get it for christmas. are these overpriced, a deal?

and when I checkout used laptops what should I at/for to make sure it's not a "lemon". thx http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif

MntSnow - How Could you in good faith offer a piece of equipment with a Winmodem in it?!?!?
You aught to give it away simply for that evil transgression!! http://www.sysopt.com/forum/wink.gif

But to address the initial thread - Forget the hitachi, waste of money.

Compaq - I'd be careful - they have a LOT of proprietary stuff which could be expensive or impossible to replace when in need of repairs.

Totally stay away from anything which says TI on it - Texas Instruments sold their laptop division to ACER who promptly dropped most of their support for old TI stuff. Used to be good stuff, but there aren't any more parts or upgrades on them.

I've seen some really good Toshibas out there and currently have an HP omnibook that is treating me well so far.

You really need to know hard drive space on the system before settling on a price. Also - go on the web with the model number and look into parts and accessories available along with prices. Anything that can't support a CD-ROM of at least 4 speed really isn't worth your time. You don't want to be stuck surfing junk shops for laptop parts. Most of the laptops you find there are door-stops. Also - make sure you get one with a PCMCIA card slot on it - can't believe the great variation of laptops that don't have these unless you get their docking station.
