Strange problem i have here.
When i start defrag, it freezes my system.
I have run scandisk and found no problems.

Only way of getting round this is to untick the option to "scan disk before defragmenting".

It will then proceed to defrag the HD, but VERY slow... its doing one cluster at a time, i don't know why, because on other systems its usually several clusters at one time.

Laptop is reasonably fast, celeron 533, 64 MEG RAM, windows 98.

I have tried running system file checker and fixed all corrupt files. Still no good.

Any ideas are most welcome.

Thanks.

Actually, that's quite normal under certain circumstances....especially when Defrag hasn't been run for some time....

Have you let defrag run until the end? The reason one cluster is being defragged at a time is because of the way the files are laid out on your HDD. You will notice that it will do colums of defragging at a time rather than a cluster a time after the first screen full of data has been defragged... Just let it run and you should see it defrag bigger portions at a time...

Could be a program is stuck in background.
I have had to run defrag in safemode and it ran faster. This also works if defrag wont run completely and keeps restarting.
Usually after running defrag in safemode completely, the next time you run it in reg mode it will run correctly.

How big is your drive and how much room is left on it? These things greatly affect how defrag runs.
