Welcome to the world of the WORST mobo I've ever seen - Intel VC820 !!!
I stopped reading your system specs after noticed that one ...
I had 3 of those, sold to my clients, all returned to me after few days of LOCKUPS, tryed EVERYTHING, even worked on it at home, flashed bioses, new drivers - NOTHING !!!
Thought I DID meet few ppl who ran this board without TOO MUCH errors, but man ... don't mess with that one, switch to something nicer, and sorry, but you'll have to buy some SDRAM now ...

Best Regards ...

I've just finished upgrading a friends computer by replacing the mb, proc, and RAM.
I used all her old drives, sound, video, modem, etc. What I'm getting is random lockups. It doesn't matter what I'm doing or how long the machine has been on. It even locked up after a reboot when I just let it sit there! It runs for anywhere between 30 sec. to 10 min.

I've been all through the BIOS and installed the drivers from the CD that came with the board. The only thing I can think of is the power supply. What would you guys recommend as a minimum? (Now you're going to laugh) THe PS in the case now is a (gasp) 200W. Would this be a symptom of a too small PS?

Being that it's not my machine, I don't want to suggest she spend more money if this isn't it.

Sys Info:

P3 1GHz
Intel VC820 mb
128mb 800MHz rambus RAM
2 HD
CD-RW
ZIP-Drive
generic PCI video
Generic PCI sound
Generic 56k winmodem

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated as this machine is now in my home, waiting to be fixed and my friend is not a happy camper.(not that I blame her)

OK guys....

So far this machine has been running in DOS for about 3 hours now, no lockups.
Had it doing different things (scandisk/surface, etc.) to keep it busy.

NO LOCK UPS?

Got me buffaloed.....

4 hours now....still OK

8 hours....

Thanks guys.

I'm really at the end of my rope on this one. The worst part of it is it isn't mine. I recommended this to a friend based on price when I should have researched it a little. Now I'm responsible for it. This girl spent close to $500 for mobo, proc, and RAM, and it's worthless!

Just for arguement's sake, here's what I've done:

Clean install on clean HD
installed drivers from CD
updated drivers from website
flashed bios to newest version
newest hub firmware drivers

and it still locks up. I can reboot and let it sit without doing a thing and it locks up. Never heard of such a thing!

The fact that I do nothing with it, does this indicate it's defective? or just a sucky board? I could understand if doing something caused the lockup but if it locks up on it's own......

However...here's a clue, if I boot to a DOS prompt, It doesn't lock up. I installed Win98se from DOS without a hitch. Ran for about an hour with no problems. As soon as it gets in Windows, 1-10min. and that's it.

Thanks for the replies and ANY ideas would be great as I may have to shell out a few $ for a new board for her.

Ok.....

This piece of **** sits and runs in DOS overnight with no problems.

Boot to Windows, lockup in 8 sec. (I timed it)

Has anybody EVER gotten this board to run?

Sounds like a defective mobo or ram.

I would return the mobo and rambus and get a new mobo and some SDRAM
