My first post!! And my name secured on yet another BBS!!!! Man- how many of these are out there??? I'm from hardwarecentral, and on a fluke saw a post for mrcs, so i jokingly went over just to claim my username... http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif Actually, maybe it's a good thing that that socalgal mrcs thing happened, otherwise i wouldn't have known about you guys here! (Curious as to how many here are also at hwc and MrCs??)
Hi socalgal - glad to be here! btw - my sister's an aerospace engineer. she got her masters and her undergrad at MIT, and did an internship a couple years ago at Rockwell in (L.A.???) she's working as a project manager in the medical engineering facility in Jersey cuz the aerospace industry's pretty tight, i guess. She's a total genius, tho, and very level headed - any openings i should tell her about? http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif
anyway, i digress...
i was onedering (oh-need-er-ing for all you movie fans) if anyone out there has/knows of a utility that will do a bit for bit copy of a cd. I know they must exist somewhere...

Cyphen,
Welcome to SysOpt! http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif
As for your question the only software that I am positive that does bit by bit copying is Plextor's (it's unfortunatly Properatary http://www.sysopt.com/forum/frown.gif) but I can say it works very well http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif (I have a Plextor 8x20 burner with a Plextor 40x reader). I do think though that Nero's latestest release can also do bit by bit.

CloneCD - does the bit-to-bit 1:1 copying you're asking about, but only with certain CDR/CD-ROM drives.
If you get the SysOpt Newsletter (and you should http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif), you'd have seen that Best Buy currently has Imation 8x20 SCSI CDR drives (with a PCI Ultra SCSI card) for $200. This is really a great deal when you consider the fact that the drive is really a Plextor drive, which by chance can be used by CloneCD to do bit copying.
It's really a great world, isn't it? http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif

Hi cyphen, glad to have you aboard! http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif
Your sister perhaps was at the former Rockwell at Seal Beach, or Downey? I believe Boeing acquired Rockwell's aerospace & defense units back in 1996. Offhand the market is pretty flat & competitive these days - hopefully this will change soon! Most of the aerospace companies have career listings at their sites. Best of luck to her.

I post here, mrc's, and, very rarely, hardware central. Cyphen, I think that with time, you will find this to be one of the most 'homey' boards... as for mrc's, i like that simply because I was there the first week, so I consider myself to be part of the member "core" lol.
Welcome!

Wow! thanks for the warm welcome's, everyone! I actually just heard yesterday about CloneCD and tried it last night. while it does apparently work, it doesn't with my CD Burner. http://www.sysopt.com/forum/frown.gif I did successfully copy an image of the CD onto the hard drive, tho.
Nero is close - it can read sector ranges that i specify, but that would be a ton of work! although thanks to CloneCD i now have o log file listing all the bad sectors, so i may just whip up a script to work with Nero. Then i guess i'll have to put them all together with a hex editor or something. It's not that critical, i suppose, it's purely academic at this point. I love a good challenge!
Maybe i'll check that cdr out at best buy - although i already have a great scsi card...
socal - thanks... i appreciate it... although that was a bit tongue-in-cheek. My sis worked at Rockwell Rockedyne division wherever in cali that is (was) back in ... lets see... the summer of 1991. She took the job she has now because she and her husband decided whoever got the best job offer first, that's where they'd move to, and Jason did, so she got a job near his. She actually - right before they got married - recieved an application from NASA to be a full time astronaut - which is something she's dreamed of since i can remember, but she felt that NASA has way too much say over your life when you become an astronaut for them - much worse than any military branch! She said the divorce rate of astronauts was (excuse the pun) skyrocketing because of that, and she didn't want her marriage to end before it began. So now she wants to be a mission specialist, which is a one or two year commitment - but we'll see. She's the kind of person who will do whatever she puts her mind to.
Anyway, thanks again everyone for the warm welcome!
