My scanner (HP 5200c) is not detected when plugged into USB. When I used Win98 it was fine & asked for drivers to be installed when first plugged in.

Now the only sign that it is attatched is in device manager, under USB root hub it list one unknown device connected.

The Motherboard is an abit KT7 (I tried 2 other Win ME machines with no luck) & I have tried re-installing the USB drivers.

Thanks in advance

I have heard of those problems with Win Me. When you put in the installation disc, did it respond saying that USB ports could not be turned on? If that's the case, insert the disc and close the window that pops up all while leaving the scanner attached to the PC. Then uninstall any of the Precision Scan software on there, but don't remove the disc when you reboot. Then you need to go into your registry editor by going to start>run>regedit

Under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Enum: Delete the entire Key labeled USB and reboot. Windows should redetect the root hub and host controller and any attached devices. Then explore the Precision Scan disc and run the setup. That should take care of it.

Thanks for the advice.

Still no luck.

The root hubs are re-detected but the scanner is still listed as an unknown device in device manager.

Any other advice

Have you downloaded new drivers from HP???
Sometimes they have to be rewritten for ME

Ok, try this!

Get the properties window up for the Unkown Device (system properties), then, click the driver tab. Click the update/install driver button.

When it asks for the path, enter your cd-rom drive letter (Presuming the drivers are on cd). Just the letter, eg. E:

Then, windows should search the drive for drivers. If it doesn`t find any, it probably means that the drivers on the cd are not compatible with ME. In this case, download the latest drivers from HP.

Repeat the above steps, only changing your cd-rom drive letter for the path of the drivers.

If ya need more help, just ask!

TD.

Yeah, I've downloaded the ME drivers.

They will only install if I install the original software first (which only adds parallel drivers), and then dont seem to make any difference.

I wasn't very clear, it is only listed as an unknown device under the USB root hub setting in device manager & will not allow me to pull up any more info.

Thanks for the idea.
