I have been interested for two years now in getting high speed internet access but have not been able as it has not been available at my location (and to think, living in a the middle of a city of 130000, you can't get high speed access...). DSL is not an option, US Worst (US West) tells me it will not be available where I live for some time to come (I'm just beyond their 3 mile limit http://www.sysopt.com/forum/frown.gif ). Cable internet is an option, though for some strange reason they tell me my house is not in their "service area" for cable internet. I naturally did not want to believe their sales agent and so I did some investigating of my own. I called up the local branch of the cable company and through a lengthy discussion with one of their employees, I found out that indeed my street DID have the new fiber optic cable system (needed for Cable internet) in place and that I should be able to receive cable internet service. The next day I proceded to call thier 1800 number, talked with a representative, who told me the same thing as before, "you can't get service!" I asked if their database could be flawed, the rep indicated that it was unlikely, if not impossible. Still in disbelief, they told me they could run a more extensive check by running this through their engineering department, this may take weeks, up to a month, they said that was all they could do http://www.sysopt.com/forum/frown.gif. I agreed, and now wait for the day when they call.

To back-up my claim that I can have cable access, I ran a check on some nearby houses, on TCI's website(two were only about 100 feet away), it came up positive.

Anyone know of anything else I could try now, today, instead of waiting? I noticed on their website, if you run a successful check it takes you to a form which is mostly filled out with the information you provided for the search. They allow you to change this information. I wonder, could I change the address to my own, sign up, and schedule the install? Would they notice? This area is supposed to have the fiber optic cables, the person at the local office even said so, they finished putting the cables in two months ago, I even saw the trucks and spools of cable...

Tired of dial-up connections,
Zach

Try it. I'm stuck with an IDSL (128kbps) and ISDN connection (112kbps). Neither AT&T or PacBell know when faster connections will be avail. I'm going T1 once it gets installed.

try qwest communications at http://www.qwest.com . they have 384K dsl access (i think thats what it is - its 300-something) and they have a lot broader range than us west. i talked to one of their sales reps, and i guess that in the not-too-far future (like within a year) they will supposedly be servicing like 90% of the country. the only bad thing about the qwest dsl is the setup fee - its like 3-4 hundred bucks...
