What is the called when a company makes products but can't market them? (ie. nvidia, and what 3DFX USED to be).

I dont know, but i know that when you market things that you dont make (but steal/copy from others) it is called "Microsoft" ...

If you mean like Delco was to GM before GM bought them... they were a "component manufacturer"...

I don't know of a specific term for a company who manufactures a product but is somehow not allowed to distribute them retail if they so desire.

I think the companies you mentioned simply prefer not to sale their products directly to consumers. They’ve made a business decision to create and manufacture their respective product and allow others to do final assembly, packaging, distributing and marketing of the completed “ready for retail” item.

Taking a product from inception to the retail market is much more expensive and complicated than simply creating, manufacturing and wholesaling.

We are a country based on financial services for an economy. Third world countries are becoming the labor force.

Thomas Edison started it with the light bulb - they can make bulbs that last a lifetime, but won't sell them because it might ruin their business.

Microsoft is a package reseller - a marketing company - they develop extremely little in the way of software. They do extremely little of their own support inhouse. They are basically general contractors. That started with DOS, which they bought from the author, and then turned around and licensed to IBM for their desktop PC's.

Look at McDonalds - they are a real-estate management company who sell specialized hamburger resturant supplies, offer training to new franchise owners, and do marketing. They also own every piece of land that every MickeyD's sits on. And there you thought they were a resturant chain - didn't you?

Look at GM - they are in the business of financing vehicles. They don't make any money selling you a car for cash. It's all of the behind the scene's financing activity and future parts sales that generates most of their income. Oh - they also make cars and buy out competition.

Another thing that got us here are the Union Organizers who have managed to turn the "made in USA" label into something that equates to over-priced.

So now almost everything is labeled "made in China". If "johnny" can't read a technical manual, or can't get an education in marketing or the janitorial arts, he might as well forget about living the American dream unless he's on a government subsidy list.

<--- Actually I think Edison's light bulb still works. You can tour his lab in Michigan. The real techies know how to make quailty products that last. The real problem is the marketing and/or the profit mongers.

You will never compete with a few bowls of rice and less than $20 dollors a week in a sweat shop, or prison labour putting things together, unless of course the bosses lower your living standards to the same level, when it comes to people working you the buyer decides who builds it, it might cost more but then you might just rather put money in the poor box at church.
