Heyal,

Have a question here about system resources.

Mine keep running seriously low, hadn't had that before and I don't have to much running at opening.

Any suggestions or programs to find and eliminate this?

This is my system {don't laugh its all I can afford right now}:

686, 150+ {Triton III & Cyrix Instead}
49megs Ram
6 gigs HD {3drvs 2.1@}
1.44 fd
1 mouse
Quick Cam {not running at time/hooked up}
Win98 SE
ICQ
Black Ice
Cable Modem

I did put RamBooster in on suggestion of one of the post in here is kwel too.

Can't think of anything else.

Try running a virus scan with the latest definitions, some viruses will use almost all resources with no other programs running.

more ram -- get more ram... sounds like you're trying to run too much stuff without enough ram... putting more ram into your rig will show better resource support.

Thank you for replies and links.
I keep virus scan updated and double, triple and quadrouple check and system always comes out fine.

I didn't think I had that much running and I have gone into the msconfig to remove all that wasn't necessary for start up. Disabled the power do hicky a while back which resolved a rebooting problem I had before, no longer have.

It seems as though something is just yanking the $%!& out of resources, a memory leak describes it visually [I know, sys resources are not ram].

I also installed the RamBooster recommended in here just to see how ram usage was doing...today got 3 out of memory notice.

Knowing I need more, more and better but can't at this time I need to find why its hogging it and to make it stop:}

Virtual mem set to double for my amt. of ram.
{49megs Ram /98 Virtual}.

Any other suggestions? Any, Anything at all?

I had mentioned viruses because my father picked one up a couple of months ago (I don't remember what), and the only thing he noticed was that his resources would go to about 10% with a fresh reboot and nothing running. Norton caught it after he updated the defs. He ended up formatting & reinstalling windows, and it's still a touchy subject. I'm not a pro, I just work on my own system and the family's, but I think that something is running and dragging down your resources. I'd hit control+alt+delete once, and see what's running. You can end task on everything but explorer and systray and still run windows. Post an update when you can.

Use WinTop to find out what is running and using resources, it does work in Win98, I use it.
It will tell you much more than ctl-alt-del

The problem is that you have your Virtual memory set to 2x your RAM. That is a yardstick to use if you already have 128MB of memory or more. With 48MB of memory I would let windows manage the Virtual memory (Swap file) or set it to a high amount.

If I were setting it myself I would set it to around 128MB minimum 256MB max. That should stop you from running out of memory.

What programs do you regularly use? By capping your virtual memory at 96MB you aren't going to be able to load many programs at the same time.
