What the hell is with a kid getting criminally charged for assault during a hockey game? This is insane! I think it is horrible that the other poor boy is paralyzed right now but it was disputedly within the context of the game and there had been a fued between the two all night. Often in sports normal occurrences unfortunately have bad results, but I don't think someone should serve most of their childhood in jail because of a freak accident. Wow, I hope the prosecutor gets his in the end!
What do you think?

I'd hafta agree with you. while I don't think charges should be pressed, I do think that the league he played in should ban him, as what he did was in violation of the rules and the timing is somewhat in question.
There was a case in Britain a year or so ago when a rugby player was paralyzed in a match, and took the referee to court for negligence.
I'm not sure about the ice hockey case, but there are occasionally crazy instances where people who are and remain family or good friends have to take each other to court to prove to the insurance companies that someone was to blame.

Heh, if you looses the case, then I am gona sue M$, they are more at fault for my personal suffering than that hockey player for the other players suffering.

That is sick. Where are they going to draw the line now? If this thing sticks and sets a precedent it could ruin ALL contact sports.
I fell sorry for the kid that got hurt but if those sorry sob lawyers push this then the parents should be sued for child abuse for letting him play-huh?

I grew up playing hockey, mostly in the schoolyard, where the rules are" they ain't no rules" I've had sticks broken over my head, my back, and anywhere else you can imagine. I was lucky enough not to have sustained any serious injury. And I have also inflicted the same, sometimes in the heat of anger, with ensuing fisticuffs, but luckily no one was seriuosly injured. That doesn't mean it wasn't possible. I feel sure, that in a game such as was decribed, with intense competition, that the intent to cripple or mane was not, I say not, on that boys mind. He just wanted, in plain terms, to bust his *** real good before the final buzzer. It's unfortunate that the other boy is in the shape he is in. Crosschecking is a two minute
minor, not a criminal offence. Due to the severity of the injury, if it is proved that the boy ,after the buzzer did, in fact, commit the infraction some sort of discipline should, in deed, be implimented. But , if, he was in the act before the buzzer and it was a 'follow through' as in basketball , where the ball in the air is still alive til the play is over, I feel a censure would be more than adequate. The kid probably feels bad enough
about the whole situation, I'm sure. When you play rough, and all who play hockey are well aware of the possibilites of physical injury
going into the game, must take some of the responsibiliy of the outcome. I sincerely hope that by Christmas morning ,that young boy is able get up ,lace up his skates and resume what ,obviuosly, he loved to do.... Play in the greatest contact sport there is.

feel bad for the kid too, since I believe throughout the season he spent maybe a total of 10 min in the penalty box. so he isn't a thug with a history. it's a shame that two lives may experience irreparable damage from this. but this has happened before in different sports and criminal charges were not brought out. yes the parents may have a civil suit like other incidents but a criminal charge, I can't see how?

U got me ROFLMAO now. http://www.sysopt.com/forum/biggrin.gif
And yes this is really sad for both kids.
I just hope and pray that they don't send that kid up the river and the one that got injured recovers and those evil prosecuters get theirs.

B****y librel wets at it again, man if you play a contact sport you know the risks, how many pros are out of the game with contact sport if you play you take your chances, you don't need some smart ***** lawyer thinking how he can ring up the cash register, I think I sead it before on this boerd only the lawyers win http://www.sysopt.com/forum/frown.gif
In Wales we played Union, (a strange form of grid iron without the padding, I think you call it Rugby stateside as you were in the world cup,( did well for a country with out a long history in the game, next world cup you'll do a lot better)) but people have been braking collar bones, necks ,arms and backs for over a hundred years in this game, and now towards the end of this cent we start chargeing people with GBH, suck if you play the game you take the risk, be it on your own head. MAN I AM MAD OVER THIS ONE it's bound to set a precedent
