Hi,

I wish to buy a CD recordable. I don't know which one to pick; Sony Spressa 4x8 INTERNAL SCSI W/SCSI CONTROLLER card ($150) or Smart and Friendly CD TURBOWRITER RW 6x4x24 INTERNAL IDE ($212). Is there a big difference between a 4X and 6X? If it were you which one will you pick.

Any help/suggestion is greatly appreciated.

Note: I don't need a re-writable capability

SCSI tends to be more reliable, but also the faster the write the better allows for more options if you have trouble. also if you are buying make sure its a rewriter, writers only will fall heavelly in price soon as they are old tech.
Check out prices for Phillips or Ricoh drives before buying.

Hi Tuando,

I have also been researching CDROM/R/RW and I think that the Ricoh MP7060S is a good buy. I also read a review in Computer Shopper and they picked it as a best buy...especially since it comes with SCSI-2 Interface. If you go to WWW.STREETPRICES.COM (http://WWW.STREETPRICES.COM) you can find a list of vendors who sell it and their prices. I found someone who was selling it for about $212.00.

Hope this help!

tuando get a ricoh mp7040 as they are made from the same parts as the 7060. around the web there is a firmware update that enables the mp7040 and their equivalent models to become a 6x write 4x rw. kind of like the p3 450 sl35d being a p3 600 in disguise. good luck. check out anandtech message board for this topic.

I have a Yamaha 4416 internal SCSI drive and it works great. I've never had any coasters and I've burned a ton of cds. Check it out before you buy. Especially b/c it is SCSI (they are better)

I agree with bigslammer (I happen to have the Ricoh) and its a valid point. I only had mag reviews to go by when I purchased mine. Mmaybe they are all good these days. I'm happy with the Ricoh performance.

Rumor has it that the S and F Turbo Writer is also the same as the Ricoh 7060 (writer of a thousand faces).
Check out http://anandforums.gisystech.com/messageview.cfm?catid=27&threadid=88498

Unsubstantiated as this rumor might be, I'm getting it for my father-in-law's Christmas present. At ValueAmerica it was about $240 including shipping, which came out to about $124, using ebates.com, my e.card, and my extra Value Dollars.

(by the way, for those who care... I'm baaaaaaaaack!)
